Beattie Murder Trial Jury Formed in Virginia
In Chesterfield Court House Virginia August 24 the jury to decide if Henry Clay Beattie Jr of Richmond will face the electric chair for his wife’s murder was completed yesterday. The trial opens with the commonwealth presenting its first witness as Beattie’s father and lawyers watch the jurors. More than seventy five witnesses are subpoenaed by the prosecution and about thirty by the defense as Beattie faces a possible first or second degree verdict. Washington August 24 A conference of senators and representatives from seven cotton growing states formed a committee to urge farmers organizations and state banking associations to back a “hold cotton for thirteen cents” drive. They accuse speculation via the New York Cotton Exchange of depressing prices, and urge cotton growers to hold grain and fiber, arguing current values and supply do not justify the low market rate.

Dynamite Clears Spokane Roadbed for 60 Miles of Rail Line
Spokane, Aug 24. Four hundred thousand pounds of blasting powder, fired in two shots, blasted over 1,000,000 tons of rock from a high cliff above the Snake River south of Spokane, enabling 60 miles of roadbed construction on the Oregon Washington Railroad between Spokane and Ayr Junction. The two shots cost 40,000 dollars. Chief engineer F. L. Pitman reported full success, though the final blast left the roadbed broken but rock well broken and easy to handle. Freight and passenger trains will use alternate routes. 100 men are at work on the line.

Spokane man blasts rock with huge charges at river
George Chew of Spokane started work May 1 with ten and finished August 11 drilling coyote holes in rock using 6000 pounds of powder to blast a cliff side. Two units fired in 30 minutes behind the cliff while 200 Heltaeers watched. The explosion killed hundreds of fish in the Snake River and hurled rock across the stream. no injuries were reported.

Oklahoma City School Board Indicted on Fifteen Charges
Fifteen members of the Oklahoma City school board face fifteen accusations from the county grand jury. They are charged with appointing board members to city school posts, paying salaries of 258 a month, and buying school desks from a firm with a board member acting as agent.
