Elm Trees Parade As Shade Makers Across The State

The elm thrives in the eastern lowlands near streams and adapts to droughts, with large, spreading growth ideal for shade. It resists drought better than many trees and remains picturesque despite dry years. Seed propagation and two to four year old saplings sold at about six cents each offer ornamental value over lumber use. The elm’s timber is limited, mainly used for slack barrels, and its overall value in wood markets remains modest.
