Oklahoma City July 20 The state board of equalization heard that land values will rise by about 40 percent and town lots by about 20 percent from county assessments. Railroads presented figures from fifty eight counties showing land and lot values currently underreported, with banks generally assessed at 100 percent of capitalization. Grants county rail and county officials argued for lower valuations while Beavers county and others voiced fear of tax revolt if increases go too far. Bandit killed in third Baxter Springs hold up spree
Baxter Springs July 19 Frisco operator Edward Wadell and his wife were robbed by Berne Wilson holding up the couple before fatally shooting him. Ernest Cox was the first victim and Wilson then attacked farmer John Hickens and his wife. Hickens fired a 45 caliber shot through Wilson’s neck killing him as his wife handed him the gun. Wilson, a longtime fix it shop operator, was known locally and recognized by Wadell and Cox during the early robberies. Police and residents assisted in tending the wounded man and notifying others, with Chas Goodpastor and H R Cle later reporting a demented man Morris was taken in for examination.

Midland Valley train wreck near Avant Oklahoma
A Midland Valley northbound passenger train crashed through a weakened bridge half a mile north of Avant Oklahoma after the bridge gave way in a swollen creek. The engine and cars plunged into the water. A wrecking train was dispatched. injuries count unavailable. The bridge was about 125 feet long and fifty feet high.

New York July 00 The chairman of the American Sugar Refining company testified before the House committee on the monopoly. He admitted that the sugar trust sold stock to ten thousand women, many New England natives, just before prices fell and the securities tumbled.
