Front Royal eyes reuse of Catlett Mountain Landfill site
County officials consider turning the closed Catlett Mountain Landfill into usable space with gentle grading for walking and biking paths. Mountain biking is floated as a potential use at a liaison meeting, with Front Royal promoting itself as the Canoe Capitol of Virginia and seeking to boost tourism through expanded outdoor recreation. Three nearby trails on Singletracks.com show diverse difficulty levels, drawing riders from states such as New Jersey and Colorado. Improvements will add a bottom liner system, drains, and piping to prevent groundwater contamination, with completion expected by mid October.
