Phoenix Project aims to reestablish local victim services

Front Royal Warren County United Way exceeded its 135000 dollar goal by finishing with 136499 dollars in 2013. The group sets an April 1 deadline to reestablish hotline and counseling services for domestic violence and sexual assault victims in Warren County under the Phoenix Project. Laurel Center will provide counseling via an outreach employee traveling to Warren County.

Rivermont and Fortsmouth Fire Firms May Merge

Warren County officials pursue combining Rivermont and Fortsmouth Volunteer Fire and Rescue into a single new building within years. Rivermont, four miles south of Front Royal, has about 20 active members and a 60 plus year old station needing upgrades. Fortsmouth, six miles west, has about four active members. The plan envisions a county owned site at the Rivermont corner.

Tweens Learn Art of Fly Fishing in After School Program

At Warren County Middle School a new program named First Cast teaches fly fishing to youths. Volunteers from Trout Unlimited Izaak Walton League and other groups meet each Tuesday after school to guide students in tying flies and learning stream etiquette.

Area students pack 1 000 meals for Stop Hunger Now in Winchester

In a Feb 22 event at James Wood Middle School, 150 plus volunteers packed 35 000 meals for hungry children in developing countries. Interact clubs and six area Rotary clubs raised over 8 000 dollars to buy rice vegetables and protein from Stop Hunger Now. Local food drive Feed Our Neighbors ran at Walmart stores from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. supporting nearby residents.

Front Royal WWII veteran leaves $1.4 million to LFCC

Charles Ross, a Front Royal resident and World War II veteran, willed a $1.4 million estate to Lord Fairfax Community College. The gift funds annual scholarships and a tuition and books fellowship for one student yearly, marking LFCC as a major beneficiary and prompting reflections on the donor’s quiet philanthropy. Ross died in 2013 at age 90, predeceased by his wife Thelma and son Jeffery, with no known immediate family.
