Public budget hearing draws many to support tax rise

At the Warren County public hearing on the FY2014 15 budget most speakers backed higher taxes. Stephen F Kurtz of the Warren County Republican Committee presented a March 21 resolution opposing tax increases including a 2 cent rise in the real estate tax rate from 59 to 61 cents per 100 dollars assessed. He urged the board to cut spending amid rising costs and a flat growth outlook. The resolution criticizes county officials for not cutting costs and reaffirms Republican values at the local level.

Front Royal Man 24 Killed in Frederick County Crash

A 24 year old Front Royal man, Chad William Sneathen, died at the scene after his 1989 Dodge pickup failed to stop at a stop sign on Bloomery Pike and pulled in front of a southbound milk tanker on North Frederick Pike. The crash occurred just after 11 30 p m on Monday night in northern Frederick County.

SVEC Seeks Rate Increase for Members

Shenandoah Valley Electric Cooperative seeks higher base rates starting this summer after filing with the State Corporation Commission. A cost of service study determined the costs to provide service, with the aim to control costs and keep fiscal stability. Former Allegheny Power customers, now SVEC, could see about a five percent bill rise, e.g., from 103.37 to 108.53 per 1000 kilowatt hours, per SVEC spokesman Mike Aulgar.

Farm blaze in Warren County causes major damage

Front Royal March 27 gusting winds fueled a fire started by discarded ashes, destroying two farm storage buildings and threatening the main home. Fire officials blamed the occupants for improper ash disposal, noting $200000 plus damages, one minor injury, and the loss of several animals as crews kept the fire under control within an hour.
