Town budget contemplates new hires amid tax concerns
The proposed budget items about 70 800 for an engineer 58 000 for enforcement 48 700 for an assistant and 56 400 for a community development director trigger council worry over funding next year. Some say not to raise taxes now to avoid recurring costs, while others note funding does not guarantee hires. A real estate tax could rise 0.5 cents to 13.5 cents per 100, with possible future increases for code maintenance and rental programs. The plan also includes a 2 percent cost of living raise for all town staff starting January 2018, costing about 71 000 in six months, funded from enterprise and general funds. The general fund budget would edge up 0.5 percent to about 45.9 million.
