Plans for a mayoral exchange between Wakefield and Calumet include city hall and school tours, a visit to the Sunday Lake mine, lunch at a mill, and a key to the city ceremony. Mrs. Hoffman, Rotary and chamber leaders, a tea, and a six o’clock banquet mark the official activities.
Three cities bid for center branch offices in the Upper Peninsula as Michigan health officials push for two additional sites. Hancock Escanaba and Ironwood proponents urge location in their communities while Gogebic County offers quarters in Ironwood.
Wakefield adults and children gain a new recreation as a roller rink opens in the ice rink building this Saturday evening. A sectional floor provides about 10 000 feet of space with plans to expand if business warrants. Saturday afternoons will be for children under high school age with 50 cents admission including skates. shoe skates add 25 cents. Public may use own skates if wood fibre or plastic rollers. Manager Delbert Larson brings a decade of rink operation experience from Ashland, Wisconsin.
A new firm offers fishing licenses to resident and non resident sportsmen at Range Cab and Cormier service station Kingsmuth's Pharmacy and Gamble Store. Range Cab sells licenses 24 hours daily seven days a week to avoid disturbing other businesses. Mr and Mrs Ben Desonia and daughter Marquette, former Wakefield residents, visited friends here Sunday. Mr and Mrs Milton Weaver and son from Chicago are renewing acquaintances this week.
A pageant titled Through the Years In Michigan will be presented at Wakefield High School gymnasium on Wednesday May 18 at 2 30 pm as part of Michigan Week observance. English students in the junior and senior classes perform with soloists and a finale inviting audience participation in Michigan My Michigan. An exhibit on Michigan has been set up in the gymnasium and Michigan history economy tourism geography and government will be stressed across Wakefield schools during Michigan Week.
The Connor Lumber and Land Company supervisory staff from Wakefield will take their seventh annual spring trip starting Thursday May 12 by Greyhound to Milwaukee. en route they stop at Wausau for a noon luncheon at the Wausau Club, then tour Allis-Chalmers plant and watch Braves game with box seats. Saturday includes a Millers Brewing plant tour and Braves game. return Sunday. Participants include Richard M. Laird Ed Rodd Irving Md rn Albert Inkala Gordon Connor Ross Donehower and John Hill among others.

Funeral services were held Thursday at Immaculate Conception Wakefield for Carl Golembeski 25 one of five killed in a head on collision near Lake Geneva Wisconsin last Sunday night Officials said the crash was the year s worst traffic accident in the state Carl died from fractures brain concussion and internal injuries He was born in Wakefield attended local schools served four years in the air force and worked for Johnson Motors in Waukegan Ill He leaves his mother seven brothers three sisters and many relatives Pallbearers were Adam Selsemeyer Jr Eugene Velosano Jack Brennan George Finco Michael Rydeski Kenneth Russ Burial was at Lakeide cemetery

Wakefield Township in Gogebic County was organized in 1920 when Wakefield village became a city. The first officers were Wm. J. Weston, Arthur W. Anderson, Andrew Kronberg, John W. Hager, and Andrew Warden. By 1953 a 12 mile high pressure oil pipeline crossed the township. The Presque Isle River Park and Porcupine Mountain area mark western gateways with a new suspension bridge spanning the river.
The board received five applicants for the vacant automotive mechanic and head bus driver positions left by George Harvey and placed these on file while approving temporary arrangements for the rest of the school year. They authorized plans to send senior athletes to a Milwaukee Braves game and discussed election filings, trustee term, and the July 11 annual meeting. Bids were opened for a new 54 passenger bus, with the old bus kept as standby.
The final P T A meeting of the school year is scheduled for Monday May 16 at 8:00 p m in the Junior high study hall upstairs at McDonald school. Mrs Ben Gertz Ironwood 7th District director will install the new officers. The cub scout program will showcase den skits and work, and a one act comedy Zingu by Edith Wharton will be presented by Wakefield club members under Anna Mattson. Parents are invited and urged to attend to support next year’s officers and board.
Wakefield Methodist Church schedules for May include Church School at 9 45 a m and Morning Worship at 11 10 a m with a message Making a Well. The WSCS meets at the church on May 18 and the choir rehearses on May 19 at 7 00 p m.
