Rumor Grips GOP Governor Primary Over Groesbeck Entry

A rumor claims former governor Alex J. Groesbeck will enter the Republican primary with Charles J. DeLand potentially withdrawing to fill secretary of state or state treasurer posts. Some officials deem the report credible while Groesbeck’s candidacy remains unsettled. If he runs, a slate reshuffle is expected. current contenders include Wilber M. Brucker and DeLand, with L. E. Father Szygula Hurt In Motor Accident

Wakefield reports Rev. Charles Szygula of St. Marys Church and Rev. Victor Karch of St. Adalberts Menominee were injured in a June 19 automobile crash when their car went through a bridge railing into a river. Both were hospitalized in Zakopane Poland with head injuries and were expected to resume travel July 15.

Barnyard Golf at State Fair Returns in 1930

The Upper Peninsula State Fair will host the Horse Shoe Pitching Tournament August 18 to 23, 1930. Last year's interest is repeated with top players Eugene Wright Iron Mountain Eskil Erickson Stambaugh and C A Robinson Iron River. Cash awards exceed 100 dollars plus a championship trophy donated by Escanaba Mayor William H Needham.

Wakefield Miss Leatha Hillis to attend Ips water carnival

Miss Leatha Hillis of Wakefield will represent the city at the Ips water carnival in Wis on July 5 and 6. Mayor Hanson announced she accepted the honor. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E R Hillis and will be joined by her mother at the Phelps celebration.

Sunday Lake Iron shifts to five day workweek

The Sunday Lake Iron company will operate on a five day schedule for an indeterminate period due to a drop of over 50 000 tons in ore requirements. About 40 men are laid off with preference given to Wakefield residents. The Clark shaft development and new level at the Sunday Lake shaft continue. The plant will ship about 516 000 tons this season including stockpiled ore. City tax collection of 186 000 will begin July 1 at 14.98 per thousand with a 1 percent monthly increase if unpaid by March 1, 1931.

Busy summer in local building trades signals growth

The building trades report a busy summer amid favorable national industrial conditions. Thomas Ashland has completed a project on Sunday Lake Street and will start framing the second story today. Ninth Motor Victim Dalpiaz Dies After Accident

Max Dalpiaz of Hurley died at Ironwood hospital moments after a motorcycle crash on Aurora street. He was 22, survived by his parents and siblings. Dalpiaz and Nick Gentile were returning to Hurley when the bike skidded on streetcar rails. Gentile escaped as the car rolled, pinning Dalpiaz. The death marks Gogebic county’s ninth motor-vehicle fatality this year.

Organize Mining Company Forms In Marenisco Iron Region

The Mahland Iron Mining company is organized to mine explorations in Marenisco township revealing merchantable iron ore. Transfers filed with proper officials at Bessemer cover the Rinson and Whitesides explorations and Copp's mine north of Marenisco. The Maitland Iron company is a new mining corporation, with speculation that it unites M A Hanna and Inland Steel interests.

Patriot Service Sunday at Union Church

Members of the American Legion are invited to a patriotic service at Union Church Sunday evening starting at 7:00. The event will feature special music and a sermon on good citizenship. Commander A. L. Stannard urged ex-service men to attend to show appreciation for the pastor's support.

City garage hosts state truck after criticism

Mayor Hanson announced on Friday that the fire fighting equipment of the state conservation department would be stored in the city garage without charge. City Tax Will See Ironwood Pay Largest County Share

Gogebic county valuations for tax year total 58.46 million, down from 60.2 million last year. Ironwood leads with 17.51 million, Wakefield follows at 12.42 million, and Bessemer township at 10.02 million. Geneva Mine Prepares Deep Operations at Geneva

The Geneva iron mine of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. between Iron Wood and Bessemer readies for deep work with a 4000 foot vertical shaft, 3200 feet now bottomed, steel lining, and a modern headframe. A 850 foot mono- log trestle links stockpiles, with three ten-ton lorry cars, 235-volt motors, and surface lighting for night safety. Hoisting, compressors, and surface gear are tailored to Geneva conditions, per Skillings Mining Review.

Lake Gogebic Water Level Suit Formed

Lake Gogebic property owners form the Lake Gogebic Water Level Association to press a court fight over the lake’s water level. S. J. Williams is president and Arthur Sorenson secretary. The suit against Victoria Copper Mining Co and related firms, filed by Gogebic County’s William G. Cloon, includes the county, road commission, and about 22 owners. A $5 per person fund is raised. excess funds go back if county bears all costs. The August term is expected for the court hearing.

City expands park land around Sunday Lake to include two parcels

The city acquires two north and west parcels around Sunday Lake for park use. It gains surface rights, improvements, and road construction through the sites. One parcel includes a mining area leased by Wakefield Iron Company. Mayor Hanson foresees park development and a road from Eddy Park to the old county road, with potential for a municipal golf course at the new site.
