The Sunday Lake mine joins the range in shipping ore to Ashland docks with the first shipment made today. W A Knoll of Pickands Mather & Co says total tonnage and duration are not yet determined. Other mines sending ore to Ashland include Townsite Montreal Ironton and Eureka.
Work on the US-2 highway project progresses across the upper peninsula. Concrete is laid from Ironwood to Sault Ste. Marie with ongoing grading at Whitefish Hill and new right of way surveyed between Kipling and Day's River. Bacco Construction handles the Day's River to Rapid River relocation. rapid river area grading begins. Preliminary survey from Cooks to Manistique starts by July 1.
R Connor Co of Marshfield has leased the Scott and Howe sawmill at Ironwood. W D Connor arrived to arrange opening. lease runs until December 1 and includes the mill and shipping facilities. Scott & Howe will keep shipping lumber and has not run the mill for three years amid an improving lumber market.
Announcement this week states Miss Gertrude Scott of Ironwood wed Raymond G. Walstrom of this city on October 17, 1932, at Neenah. Mrs. Walstrom, a Luther L. Wright High School graduate, has worked as a Bell Telephone operator in Ironwood and will transfer to the Wakefield exchange. Mr Walstrom is a local decorator.
Mr and Mrs Victor Lepisto visit relatives in Kenosha. Mr and Mrs Frank Prout of Minneapolis stay with Frank Kingsmith. A Wakefield Rotary outing occurred at Bay View lodge near Winegar. Duncan family at Chicago for Century of Progress. Gribble family to Kenosha to visit relatives. Joliffe family back from Chicago World's Fair. Miss Marie Lawler nurses in Chicago on vacation at Wakefield home. Trezises return from Ann Arbor with daughter Jane remaining for treatment. Quist visit Bloomington after Century of Progress trip. Cavenders and Ruth Thom of Illinois travel to Duluth for district manager appointment and office assistants.
Walter M. Berry reports Gogebic county leads the Upper Peninsula in poor relief administration. The three district system, two field inspectors, and 39 bookkeeping forms support a comprehensive operation. A study by Professor Haber may standardize this model for statewide adoption.
The weekly band concerts and free dances at the Eddy park pavilion begin Thursday night. Chester A. Rydeski, the band director, announced the return of last year’s popular program. Large crowds attended Wakefield events on Thursdays previously, and officials expect the same turnout this season.
John Ozzello finished remodeling his Lake View restaurant on Sunday Lake Street and has reopened for business. Mrs Ivan Del Favero will be the cook at the new establishment.
An order abolishing the Iron Mountain post of the state police was received this week by Sergeant A J Heydon, commander, from Lieutenant Ora Demaray of Marquette. The order, sent from Lansing, cites possible expense curtailment due to a reduced appropriation. Posts at Grand Haven and Alpena were also discontinued and fifty six personnel dismissed.
W. Bemer, superintendent of schools, offered a contract for next year at 3700 dollars, down from 4400 last year. He will assume principal duties at the senior high school and take over work from H. L. Yivisaker who will not return. Past salary scales show top wages for men with MA degrees and lower rates for women.
Plans for the upper peninsula American Legion convention at Bessemer from Friday July 21 to Sunday July 28 proceed, says Guy M Cox adjutant welfare officer. A welfare officers school is set for Friday, with talks by Robert J Byers Horace C Parrish and others. Eight drum and bugle corps are expected with prizes 150 75 and 25 and partial expenses. The program lists registration parades drills banquet and a grand ball with attendees from multiple towns including Marquette Sault Ste Marie Kingsford Hancock Calumet Iron River Stambaugh and Escanaba. Governor Comstock may attend and John Elden will represent the national Legion.
At Escanaba a meeting led by Marvin Coon solidified reallocation of upper peninsula beer inspector territories to equalize mileage. Michael Nolan tours the district to place four warehouses. Sam Jacobs shifts to cover Gogebic Iron Dickinson counties with Ontonagon north to Bruce's Crossing. Edward Cameron gains Marquette Alger counties. Marvin Deson adds Luce and eastern Berett and remaining Alger areas.
A local American Legion post will host its annual Fourth of July celebration with a children’s program. Activities include a doubleheader baseball game between the West Side Wolverines and Castile Cuba and other features for the day.

Early next week Henry Ahola is expected to file for the Wakefield township school district treasurer position. Ontonagon county highway engineer T H Wilcox says the state highway department will absorb the Greenland to Ontonagon county road and add it to M-35. The 18.5 mile new stretch will connect Menominee to Green Bay shores through Escanaba Gladstone and Negaunee toward the Huron mountains, with western links via Skanee L Anse Baraga to Ontonagon. M-35 will run parallel with M-64 Ontonagon to White Pine Bergland and US-2 near Marenisco, giving the trunk line access to both the iron and copper ranges of Michigan, second only to US-41 in scope.
Yatchak of Wakefield married Miss Armatta of Ironwood at St Michael Catholic at 8 in the morning. Rev Charles Szygula officiated. Regina Yatchak and Pauline Dedo attended. Marshall Lepinski was best man with Roman Ryskewecz and Lucian Oleknevich as ushers. The couple left for Chicago to attend the World's Fair and will reside in Wakefield.
The Finnish Evangelical Lutheran National Church of America will convene its annual convention at Ironwood from June 28 to July 2 with delegates from Uni States and Canada. Ironwood has hosted the event three times before, in 1901 1911 and 1923.
W P LeMieux will succeed the late Lynn A Brownell as conservation officer at Watersmeet. Col William A Bergin deputy field administrator for the state conservation department announced the appointment after an examination held at Watersmeet this week.
George A. Hager of Marquette stayed with Mayor and Mrs. Cloon, a brother in law of Mr. Cloon. Frank Ringsmith returns from Hibbing to spend summer here. Frank Napel licensed to open a beer garden on Sunday Lake boulevard. John Henry Kent. Mrs. Mary Osborn and the Tobins visited Mesaba range relatives. The Lees depart for Coens for a Wakefield visit. Yatchak family from Milwaukee guests at their home. Mrs. C. W. Benner and son Robert travel to Interlochen for music camp. Dan Chamberlain and wife from Minneapolis visited Wakefield relatives. Chamberlains, formerly Miss Gertrude Olson, later travel to Minocqua where he works as counselor at a boys camp.
