National Steel declares 25 cent dividend amid rising ore shipments
May 1933 Lake Superior iron ore shipments rose sharply with a 712.56 percent jump from May 1932 and a 535.09 percent gain by June 1. Total May shipments reached 900,534 gross tons, while season-to-date through June 1 stood at 983,744 tons. Production in the U S climbed with 906,725 gross tons of pig iron in May, 61 blast furnaces operating, and tin plate at 145,000 tons. National Steel directors set a 25 cent quarterly dividend for June 30, funded from current earnings. The Commodore mine on the Mesabi range will resume. expected to ship 75,000 tons this season.

Mrs. John Novakoski, 94, mother of Joseph Novakoski of Wakefield, died at the family home in Bessemer Saturday afternoon. She was Bessemer's second oldest resident. The funeral was held at Bessemer Wednesday afternoon. She was born March 19, 1839, and had resided in this county 50 years. Walter Hagen Arrives. Walter Hagen, professional golfer who took part in the national open at Glenview, Illinois, arrived this week at his summer home near Watersmeet. They claim large timber companies have been undervalued as efforts to raise the tax rate above 15 mills failed. The board warns 15 mills is unsustainable under current valuations. Street lights were shut off and township hall service cut this week. water may be shut off unless a savings plan is adopted, with residents proposing a $2 monthly charge to fund the supply, which had been free.

Tinna Arola Rites Held Last Wednesday

Funeral services for Leslie C. Lewis held in Bessemer
Leslie Charles Lewis died at his Planter home Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Sharon Lutheran Church in Bessemer by Rev. F. E. W. Eastman. Burial followed at Wake Cemetery. Survived by wife Mrs. Lewis and three daughters Constance Etta and Betty Jean. His mother Mrs. Laverna Lewis and sister Mrs. Theresa Angus, both of Planter, also survive. Two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Clark and Bernice Pennock, reside in Ann Arbor.
Aged Caretaker's Body Found On Lake Shore
After a multi day search for Dad Brown seventy eight the badly decomposed body was found on the shore of Sandford Lake by Jack Steinmetz and Undersheriff Percy Drew. Brown served as caretaker at Norton property on the lake for years. It was not determined if he drowned or died while walking along the shore. The remains were taken to Neidhold funeral parlors and interred the same day.

A total of 3,836 tuberculin skin tests were given to Gogebic County students since January 30 with 10 showing two plus or greater reactions. Ironwood and Wakefield districts reported notable positivity rates, while Lac View Desert Indian School was not tested due to road conditions.
