Telephone expansion planned for Wakefield exchange
A Wakefield city commission meeting noted nine building permits including a $5,000 Michigan Bell Telephone exchange expansion at Brotherton and Smith. Plans foresee doubling the building size to serve the Wakefield area. Budget figures were presented for the upcoming year with allocations to each department. Howard Ronan, 53, former Wakefield resident, died in Chicago June 11, survived by wife and three daughters.

Wakefield Legion delegates prepare for the district convention at Menominee this weekend with a three day program including parades drills and concerts. Over a thousand visitors expected. The post votes on officers for the coming year with nominations July 1 and elections July 15. Jennie Patyk elected Legion Auxiliary president along with a slate of officers. Membership stands at 992 with 19 new members and 10 reinstatements plus one junior and three Golf Star members.

Plan Four City Charter Amendments Proposed
The special study committee decided to submit four amendments to the city charter at the August general election. Proposals include moving election day to the first Monday in April and changing term start to the second Monday in April for three years. Salary reductions for commissioners are set, with five dollars per meeting and a $200 yearly maximum, and mayoral pay of $150 over the council limit. Meetings would drop to two per month, and a city manager form of government may be pursued by consolidating departments. If consolidation is blocked, the issue will go to the August ballot.
