The National Chaplain of the Forty and Eight will oversee the wreck event planned for Saturday evening for members of this Legion branch. The gathering aims to mark the occasion with a ceremonial program and group participation.
Timber lands in Wakefield township gained about $400,000 in value while farm lands were reduced by 10 to 15 percent at the annual board of review. Timber land valuations saw strong protests from large owners including Bonifas Lumber Co and General Motors Corp, while several local operators supported the changes. Supervisor Hamlin defended the shifts, noting past undervaluation of timber and overvaluation of farms, and urging fair treatment to encourage farming. Charles Ringsmuth, employed by Standard Oil in Colombia, is vacationing with his parents and overseeing a steam shovel operation there.
The district convention of the upper peninsula American Legion posts meets at Bessemer next week. A major demonstration and reunion is planned on the range with Wakefield designated Wakefield day on Thursday June 21. The city will display flags and close businesses at noon to allow workers to attend.
Sunday Lake Iron Company begins updating the Clark shaft area with the old engine house repurposed for a hoist and a retirement cry being modernized as a change house. Steel for the new headframe from Worden Allen Co of Milwaukee arrives next week, with completion targeted around August 10 and relining of the shaft in steel sets and concrete. The shaft will feature two cage hoists for timber and men and a pipe and ladder access.
Congressman W Frank James announces plans to travel by airplane from Selfridge Field near Detroit to Ishpeming and the copper country visiting Fort Hayes, other army posts, and Bessemer for a Legion convention. Pilot Lieutenant Dinger accompanies him with Selfridge officers in the party. Arrival dates in Ishpeming and Bessemer depend on field availability.
John Pikka and Oscar Hallberg of Wakefield describe harsher conditions at railroad tunnel camps in Berrie Washington than promised by a contractor’s agent. They left Sunday Lake mine for mining work but earn 65 cents per hour, pay 1.40 daily for meals, and see frequent worker turnover. They urge H J Richards at Sunday Lake to rehire them, noting they could earn more working four days a week there.
Lawrence Apitz of Bessemer resigned as Wakefield High School football coach and instructor to take a more lucrative position in Evansville Ind. A star at the University of Chicago, he earned Phi Beta Kappa honors for scholastic attainment. No successor has been named yet.
Chase 8. Osborne of Sault Ste. Marie a former Michigan governor explorer author and scientist will be among the most interesting visitors at the Bessemer convention next week. He will address a public meeting Friday. Osborne declined to be voted for vice president at Kansas City after his name was introduced by a Michigan delegation member. Other prominent attendees include Governor Green J G Emery John Roehl and past Michigan department commanders along with state leaders and several Wisconsin officials and U S congressmen.
About 50 bids were received for Charcoal Tren Co parcels at a Newberry court sale. Receiver Andrew H. Green will present recommendations to Judge Fred M. Raymond that the bids be rejected. Several bids for the Bes semer gale mine were submitted in writing, from mining companies in the Lake Superior district. Additional sales may follow as the receivers seek to dispose of other Charcoal lands, timber, mill and Marenisco town site holdings with offers in hand.
Robert R Wright of Lionwood entered the probate judgeship race as three other candidates vie for the prosecuting attorney post. The current probate judge Harry K Bay of Ironwood may seek renomination. Wright, born in Ironwood, trained in local schools and later studied law at Wisconsin, earning bar qualifications in Michigan and Wisconsin before practicing with Thomas A Landers in Ironwood.
Wakefield meets Bessemer at the local ball park next Sunday with a 2:20 PM start. Wakefield hopes to clinch its first win after a 12 inning marathon against Winegar last Sunday. Pitching duties will be shared by Bessemer and Buonavaaro for Wakefield with Antilla to start. Erickson and Muncher will handle battery duties for Bessemer.
A proposed amendment to the federal highway act would allow planting and maintaining shade trees along the federal highway system as part of aid projects. Supporters hail the move as a major step toward transforming traffic corridors into more attractive routes. The changes also include full financing for primary federal aid projects and for secondary feeders in sparsely populated public lands areas, plus possible expansion of eligible mileage on roads within national or Indian reservations.
Commander Spafford head of the American Legion plans to fly to Bessemer for day two of the convention. He will deliver a public address at the Rex Theatre at 2:00 PM Friday afternoon.

The Sunday Milwaukee Sentinel reports that A. W. Clevenger state inspector of high schools and former Wakefield superintendent, was arrested for violating the conservation department order that bans fishing in inland lakes before June 16. He faces forfeiture of his special conservation officer badge, with local speculation that the incident may be staged to target him.
Charles Windberg filed an action in the circuit court alleging injuries on the Sunday Lake Iron Co premises. He seeks 20000 dollars in damages. The bill detailing the complaint has not yet been filed as of Bes semer. Alex Frederickson and his wife of Iron Mountain are visiting relatives in the city.
