Wakefield Mine Earns Holmes Safety Certificate for Third Year
The Wakefield mine of Wakefield Iron Co. received the Joseph A. Holmes safety certificate for a third consecutive year at a Wico club meeting. Officials cited an unbroken record of no lost time accidents over more than a year and a history of high productivity and safety awards in the Lake Superior district. Attending were U S Bureau of Mines representative S Crawford and officials from Iron River Bessemer and Duluth among others.

Aho, 50, died at Wakefield General Hospital from chest injuries received near Thomaston the previous night. Police investigate conflicting accounts of whether he was struck by a car and left, or attacked by two men who fled. He had worked at the Victor Ahonen camps near Gogebic Station.

Repairs on High School Floors and Ceilings
At Thursday’s board meeting the school district approved changes to the Junior High repairs raising the contract by 9812.50. Iron River contractor A Proksch will install composition floors and no wood ceilings plus a flat roof new steel stairs and relocated toilets on both floors. Work should finish by September 3 with good weather.
