Wage and price pressures in postwar Michigan industries

A digestion of 1948 wage trends notes that industrial wages rose 84 percent from 1941 to 1947 while living costs climbed 694 percent. Dividends reached about 35 percent of corporate earnings in 1947, with much postwar plant expansion funded from earnings. Economists warn wage gains may outstrip productivity, potentially eroding workers’ savings and pensions, and suggest adopting a policy similar to England’s to avoid broad wage-led inflation.
