Michigan 1948 special session settles reform tug of war

The 1948 Michigan special session ended with a compromise that limits governor control by adding a state administrative board oversight. Governor Sigler and the reform committee paused drastic constitutional changes and postponed merger plans of 100 agencies into 18. Budget reforms and a new comptroller role for John Perkins were outlined, while predicting a $14 million deficit and possible repeal of the sales tax diversion.

Church School Closing Program at First Lutheran Church

The First Lutheran church school will meet Saturday at 9 30 a m for closing exercises. Sunday services will be in English at 9 00 a m and in Finnish at 10 30 a m with a 2 00 p m program marking the school’s summer closure. Seven U P high schools qualify for driver education cars

Seven Upper Peninsula high schools including Wakefield and Eben Daggett National Mine Perkins and Carney qualified to apply for dual control driver education cars after an in service training at Northern Michigan College of Education. Dr W C Hoppes said the program grows with more schools adopting driver education across the peninsula.

Prospects Slim for Change in Duck Season

Fish and Wildlife Service officials told a Senate expenditures subcommittee that major changes in duck hunting rules are unlikely. Assistant Director Fred C. Lincoln said a modest population increase might occur from 54 million last year, but bag limits or shorter seasons require at least 80 million ducks. Director Albert M. Day noted a bottoming duck population with a possible rise if northern breeding grounds see favorable weather, with 1948 regulations to be announced later. last season allowed four ducks per day with 30 day east and 35 day west seasons.

Local committees discuss plans for Legion celebration

Louis chairman Celeste Clyde Peter Salo Adolph Bugni John Haglund aart Al Wacker Willa Radowski and committees from the VFW and Chamber of Commerce met Friday night at the Legion quarters to map event plans.

Victor to preside at safety conference in Duluth

Safety engineer J. P. Victor will preside at a two day safety conference in Duluth on June 17 and 18. The program includes a banquet on Friday evening and will bring mine safety officials underground workers and about 20 000 Lake Superior district workers together to discuss safety.

Mrs Milan Rites and Vacation News From Ironwood Area

Mrs Nettie Milan widow of Mel Milan resided at Plymouth for years. She was born November 20 1880 in Bowerville Minnesota. Surviving are her husband a sister Bidha Keppel St Paul four brothers Howard John Keppel St Paul Eugene and William Keppel Kelly Lake Minnesota. Meanwhile Dr V E Lepisto returning from Harvard visits his parents and will relieve Dr Keskey of Ironwood during his vacation to the Midwest.

U P State Fair Plans Expanded Entertainment at Escanaba

Relocation of Cut River road completed in 1947

The Cut River relocation and paving grade finished late in 1947 closes one of three unpaved gaps on the main highway across the Upper Peninsula from the Sea to St Ignace and Ironwood. Hanson family to tour nation for Marshall Field publicity

Within days Mr. and Mrs. Hanson of Evanston Illinois will depart with Marshall Field executives to travel across the continent. They will visit national parks coast fishing industries lumber empires water power sources dude ranches and Rocky Mountain peaks to obtain color pictures for Marshall Field stores. Speedy Hanson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hanson of Brotherton Street, accompanies them.
