Columbians Elect Annual Officers

Michael A. DeStasio was reelected grand knight of the Bishop Magnars Council Knights of Columbus. Charles Valesano was renamed deputy grand knight with Joseph Gagnon as chancellor Joseph Gill as recorder John Bonovett as treasurer and Louis Verch as warden. Other officers elected include Advocat e James Bria inside guard James Conterio outside guard Whitney Johnson and trustee Morton Hickey.

Obergs Celebrate Golden Anniversary Home of Moyles

Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Oberg will mark their golden wedding anniversary at the Moyles home, Friday June 9. Open house runs 3 to 5 p m and 7 to 10 p m. They recently moved from Milwaukee to Wakefield to reside with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Moyle.

Council Considers Four New City Ordinances This Week

The council discusses a temporary lighting plan for a school playground to aid a softball league with possible later use for the city white way. Four ordinances are proposed including pollution cleanup of Sunday Lake weed control urban housing survey and issuance of water revenue bonds with a higher minimum water charge. Twelve building permits totaling about 4500 dollars were approved and the 1950 51 budget was adopted with borrowing authority and water exploration funds explained.

Daily Bible School to Start June 19

A vacation bible school runs June 19 to 23 and June 26 to 30 at Central School from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. It is sponsored by First and Immanuel Lutheran Churches with help from Wakefield Methodist Church. Open to children aged four to 13 from various church affiliations. Activities include worship, study, handicrafts, visual aids, and supervised play. Twenty three teachers have signed up. A nurse will be on duty. Parent’s night on June 30 features a program by children and a social hour with coffee.

July 4 Wakefield Boat Races At Gogebic Club

A July 4 program of outboard motor boat races in Wakefield features seven events for racing runabouts utility runabouts and hydroplanes. The Gogebic Boat Club hosts with co sponsorship from the American Legion and the chamber of commerce.

Wakefield Woman's Club Officer Elected National Treasurer

Mrs. R I C Prout, charter member of the Wakefield Woman's Club, was elected treasurer of the National Federation of Women's Clubs at the annual convention in Boston. She has served as local club president, state federation president, and held roles in the national organization during wartime and the auditing committee this past year. She has lived in Wakefield since the death of her husband, Dr R I C Prout, in March 1939.

Burns Celebrate 50th Wedding Anniversary in Marinette

Mr and Mrs Peter Burns of Marinette Wisconsin observed their golden wedding at St Anthony s church and hosted a church hall reception for about 250 guests The celebration also marked the second anniversary of the marriage of Mr and Mrs George Nystrom Their daughter Marie married Noel F Dyer at the same mass Attendees included the Moran and Nystrom families and eight children of the Burns have attended the event Mr Burns a former Sawyer Goodman Lumber Co employee and his wife reside in Marinette since their marriage.

Joseph Sigler Dies at 84 in Hurley Area

Joseph Sigler, 84, died in his sleep early Saturday after months of ill health. He lived with his sister Mrs. Teresa Regis for four and a half years. Funeral rites were held Monday at St. Mary's church with burial at Hurley cemetery. Born in Austria on February 5, 1866, he married there in 1895. He and his wife and two children came to the United States in 1921, settled in Hurley until Mrs. Sigler’s death in 1942, then lived with his daughter in Bessemer and Wakefield.

Local Teacher Robert Grose Resigns From Iron River School

Robert Grose, a senior high school instructor for two years, has submitted resignation to the board of education. Mrs. Grose also resigned last year. The Grose couple reside in Iron River and his future teaching plans are undecided.

Two Candidates Seek Re election To School Board

Clarence Jacobson and Ernst Trettin announce their bid for re election to the board of education. Both filed nominating petitions this week. Final filing day is Tuesday June 20 and each petition must carry at least 50 names of registered voters in the school district.

Finnish Reading Club Elects Officers

Mrs. Oscar Kumpula was elected president of the Finnish Reading Club at a recent meeting. Other officers elected include Mrs. Isaa Syrjala as vice president, Mrs. Laine Ranta as secretary, Mrs. John Haanpaa as assistant secretary, Mrs. John Kangas as treasurer, and auditors Mrs. Nestor Niemi and Mrs. John Pirhonen. The book committee includes Mrs. Ida Lehto and Mrs. John Haanpaa, with Mrs. Laine Ranto named news reporter.

Willie Jackson Still At Large After Escape From Wisconsin Prison

Willie Jackson escaped from the Marquette prison farm on May 18 and remained at large Thursday afternoon as state police aided Wisconsin officers in the Minocqua area. A birdhound failed to track him. he previously stole several cars including a truck near Winegar and was last thought to be in the Gaylord lake region after a night with Matt Anderson. He was serving 7½ to 15 years for breaking and entering and could have been up for parole later this year.

Entertain Past Matrons Hostess Leads Eastern Star Evening

Mrs Harlan Johnson hosted past matrons of Victory Chapter Eastern Star at her home Friday with card games and lunch. Plans were laid for a past matrons group. On Wednesday Mrs H L Trezise and Mrs Margaret Holmberg hosted Ironwood and Bessemer chapter matrons for a dinner served by the WSCS church group. Bridge and canasta were enjoyed. Conchita Garcia left for Detroit to visit relatives.

Legion To Elect New Officers At Legion Post

The Geroux Post American Legion will elect new officers on June 20. Claude Cowling and Elmer Hill seek post commander with ballots available at the canteen and by mail to the Adjutant. Elections include multiple nominations for first and second vice commanders and eight other positions with twelve members vying for five executive committee seats.

Wakefield Township School Census Shows Decline

The Wakefield township district reports 1073 school children ages five to nineteen in the latest census, down from 1104 last year. Total children under twenty reach 1522, with 566 boys and 407 girls in the key age range.

Viviano Rites Set Friday in Wakefield Funeral

Funeral services for Lawrence Viviano 59 will be held Friday morning at Frick Funeral Home with American Legion military honors. Rev Ronald J Bassett will officiate. A World War I veteran, Viviano died Tuesday from a heart ailment after years of ill health. He born in Calangero Italy on March 15 1891 came to the United States in 1905 and resided in Wakefield. He married Anna Bessie January 2 1922 and is survived by a son Harold of Saxon Wis and one grandchild.

Wakefield Man Set to Enter Lutheran Ministry

Tauno Jarvinen will be ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Suomi Synod at Bethany Lutheran Ishpeming next Wednesday evening. He earned a Wakefield high school diploma in 1941 and studied at Northern State Teachers College, Suomi College Hancock. He has accepted a pastorate in Aberdeen Washington and will move with his wife Ellie Maki Ramsay and family after the 18 June synodal convention. Mr and Mrs Isaac Juoni arrived in Wakefield from Boston after their Helsinki wedding January 22.

City to Seek Bids for Three Trucks and Diesel Engine

The city manager informed the council bids will be sought for two 2-ton and one 1 1/2-ton trucks plus turn-ins for two current trucks. A new diesel motor for the FWD truck, about 2500 dollars, is also planned. Bids due by noon Saturday June 17.
