Local electors backed a 3.6 percent tax cap for all property taxes except debt. 553 voted for the measure, 273 against, 25 or 26 not registering. City attorney Robert A. Burns ruled that two thirds of 826 cast votes, not of 851 registered, determine adoption. The commission accepted 826. outcome to be decided in court possible.
H L Ickes said John D Rockefeller Jr. plans 10 million dollars for war parks and 15 million more. The Isle Royale issue in Michigan could gain federal title through a state commission before full federal control. The island, a state asset, needs funding for land purchases and improved summer boat service as tourism grows.
Ironwood and Wakefield entered in the Peninsula Relays held in Escanaba today. Entries include Wakefield 880 yard yield with Proteau Windberg Koivu Perkin Jarvinen Saillie and Class 880 team details. high and low hurdles with Proteau Bonino Perkio. Ironwood Class B 880 yard and medley lines with Micklich A Johnson Baldwin Simonich Denneir plus W Johnson Baldwin in high and low hurdles.
Mr and Mrs A A Bawden were honorees at a fifteenth wedding anniversary event hosted by the Ice Place Ladies Society last Friday night at the home of Mr and Mrs Carl Bawker. The couple’s daughter is Miss Elizabeth Blakey Williams of Ironwood before her marriage and they have a son, Lawrence Edward. Mr Bawden serves as safety engineer for Pickands Mather and Co.
George Koronski highway engineer announces new road signs to guide travelers at several intersections. The notices point to Black River road north from Bessemer, nearby waterfalls, Lake Superior county areas and Mount in Secmeand as key landmarks.
H G Dalton of Pickands Mather, Cleveland marks the fiftieth anniversary of his tie with the firm. Organized in 1883 by Samuel Mather and Colonel James Pickands, the company now operates iron ore mines in the Lake Superior district and a large fleet of ships and docks. Dalton has led the firm since the founders’ death and serves on the boards of related industries, including Sheet & Tube.
Borseth leads Bergland with 18 points at the Bergland One County Track and Field Meet where Greenland trails with 27.5 and Ewen 11.5. Moravich of Greenland won the 220 yard dash and high jump, while Borseth tied for first in high jump and 100 yard dash. Other notable finishes include Laurila and Moravich on shot put, and pole vault results with multiple ties.
Arrangements for the annual Fortune Lake Bible camp have been announced. Rev. Charles W. Erickson of First Lutheran will lead the week at the camp near Wakefield with Paul Bible School in St. Paul and Rev. C A Wendell of Grace Lutheran Minneapolis as speaker. Dr. O H Bostrom of Red Lake Marquette will preach the sermon for the opening session. Wakefield groups have attended regularly and expect to join again this year.
Miss Grace Olson and Miss Irene James were guests of Marquette friends last week. Many families, including Mr and Mrs Charles Valesano and Mr and Mrs Robert Jones, traveled to attend events and visit kin across Chicago Ann Arbor and Crystal Falls. The Ironwood board of education met briefly as new members were arranged to satisfy legal requirements while local clergy and families attended religious ordinations and memorial observances. A highway project north of Harbor started, extending toward the new interstate bridge with concrete work and grading near Kimball.
Gogebic county RFC loan plans for June may rise as $3,915,107 in state relief funds aid Michigan. Geroux Post No 11 acquired 15 shares of First National Bank stock in Wakefield, funded by a bond investment. Judge Driscoll approved the purchase, noting funds from World War II defense league were to serve a worthy purpose and post officials obtained a unanimous vote to proceed.
Michigan reports that the 3.2 beer tax, effective May 11, averaged about $12,300 daily in the first nine days of sales. State officials caution this may not hold, with annual tax projections between 2.5 and 3 million dollars. Funeral services for John Stamboski, longtime Wakefield resident of 15 years, were held at St. Marys Catholic Church Wednesday morning. The obituary notes he died Sunday and mentions surviving relatives including Olejniczak and Ontonagon.
Local pastors delivered strong messages at the Wakefield Memorial Day events held last Tuesday. Rev. Robert E. Byquist spoke at the community building, and Rev. Wake field engineers received notices from M D Van Wagoner newly elected state company head indicating a day to day layoff after July 1. They were told to prepare to seek other work and that a department housecleaning is underway. Local crew replacements depend on retirement and ongoing construction jobs.

The Plymouth mine will begin a stripping program in early July and continue through summer, with preliminary work starting June 5. A 65 man crew will be employed, only regular mine employees will work, and about 100000 yards of rock will be stripped and placed on the waste dump to relieve unemployment in Wakefield. Operations, including pumpage, will resume with four day weeks by July 1 as repairs and preparation continue.
Upper peninsula residents join passenger and crew lists for the steamer George M Cox wrecked on the Rock of Ages reef off Isle Royale on May 27. Among survivors are Albert Gale and family from Ironwood, C Harold Wescoat and family from Houghton, Chas A Wright of Hancock, and others. Crewmembers from Houghton and Hancock are named. An official hearing on the disaster is set at the Douglass House in Houghton with Bureau of Navigation and Steamboat Inspection officials.
Cyclone Sally a three act comedy will be staged at Ramsay town hall Tuesday and Wednesday by the auto Ladies Aid society of Wakefield church. Forty five cast members include singers dancers comedians and a six piece orchestra. A 2:30 matinee for children and non evening attendees with 8:30 evening shows.
About 100 highway engineers, road commission members and others interested in highway construction and maintenance are expected at the annual meeting of the road builders association in Escanaba. The event runs Thursday and Friday, June 8 and 9, with R. P. Mason of Escanaba serving as president of the association.
Kirby Owen White, former Wakefield resident and early town figure, has died in Detroit. He was part of the local business lineage through his father G. W. White who started Kingsmuth Hardware and later engaged in lumber on the site now occupied by Wakefield Lumber Co. The White family arrived in Wakefield in 1886.
