Michigan Highway Dept Plans Major 1949 Construction Push
The Michigan State Highway Department under Charles M. Ziegler reports 151 new 1949 projects with a total value of 16.1 million dollars and 72 additional early contracts totaling about 23.63 million dollars. Federal funds extend to 1952, adding 24.5 million to reach 49 million for trunkline work, with most projects expected to be let by spring 1949 and many finished by year end. Maintenance covers 49 roadside parks, 39 scenic turnouts, 20 roadside springs, and 3,000 roadside tables, while three tourist information lodges serve nearly half a million visitors. The State Ferries, celebrating their 25th anniversary, set a Mackinac Straits traffic record in 1948, carrying an estimated 552,000 vehicles and 1,511,000 passengers, with year-round operation and continued growth. Gogebic Mines Ship Over Five Million Tons
Gogebic range mines shipped 5 302 823 tons of iron ore from Ashland during the 1948 season, with Lake Superior district total shipments reaching 82 937 201 tons. Escanaba and Marquette docks handled large totals, Duluth and other ports contributed multi‑million ton figures, marking the largest peace time ore tonnage.
