Christmas seal sale total tops previous year in Wakefield
Seal sale below 1954 totals reached 2696.32 dollars with Arnold Korpi as county campaign general chairman. The figure is up 316.32 from early last week but still 43.96 under the year ago pace. Christmas Program Lights Wakefield Woman's Club Meeting
The Wakefield Woman's Club held its Christmas meeting on December 7 in the Community building. A quartet with Mrs. Davey Miss Williams Mr. Hodge and Mr. Clemo performed carols while Rev. Herman Strough dies at 69 longtime Wakefield official
Herman Strough, 69, member of Wakefield’s first city commission, died Monday evening at Divine Infant hospital after a long illness and prior leg amputations. Born January 1, 1886 in Poland, he moved to Wakefield, served six years over water and power, later worked as a conservation officer, and retired to Lake Gogelic. Rites were held Friday at St Mary’s church. He is survived by a daughter in St Paul and three sisters in Wakefield and Rudyard.

The Wake field district has accumulated 83 inches of snow since the first fall on October 24, with most still on the ground. Last year on December 8 the total was about 43 inches, and the coldest day reached five to 14 below zero, with the lowest reading at the Ramsay pump station early morning.

City Workers Approve Social Security Benefits Plan
City workers voting 86 percent of 35 eligible approved final steps to obtain social security benefits. The city clerk was authorized to notify officials. Benefits retroactive to January 1. All employees have four quarters of eligibility for the federal pension. Existing contributors to the state retirement fund will qualify for both plans upon retirement. New hires will contribute only to the federal social security plan.

Navy lieutenant on leave from submarine duty
Irving Voyer Jr. lieutenant junior grade in the U S Navy is spending a week’s leave with his parents on Hancock Street. A Naval Academy graduate, he serves on USS Piper, a Groton based submarine that recently returned from training and goodwill voyages to Mediterranean ports and Atlantic islands. Hospital fulfills need of Gogebic county aged and sick
Dr. H A Tressel told Rotary Monday that Wakefield has become the Gogebic hospital center with 65 bed Divine Infant facility and 99 bed Gogebic hospital. He outlined the evolution from almshouses to modern care, noting 82 men and 14 women occupy the 99 beds and that most funding comes from patient aid and state programs. County taxpayers previously paid about $60,000 yearly. 1956 contributions drop to about $16,000, saving over $44,000 annually. The hospital employs nurses around the clock, a doctor on call, a matron with dietary duties, and a supervising nurse overseeing staff.
