Wakefield Iron Co announces a two shift operation to keep the open pit active through winter. About 140 men are employed on day and night shifts as equipment is repaired. Sunday Lake will operate six days weekly. Plymouth mine keeps a small repair crew and will not pit work this winter.
Rep. W. Frank James announces a plan to create a national defense department to oversee army navy marine corps and air service. He says consolidation would end friction between branches boost efficiency by nearly 100 percent and save millions by centralizing purchasing.

Negotiations are underway for Northwestern Motor Bus Co to purchase the Bessemer Ironwood interurban electric railroad from Lake Superior District Power Co. The power company will keep equipment and rolling stock, salvage material, while tracks and pole line are removed and the right of way abandoned. The bus firm plans to extend lines and run a regular Wakefield to Ironwood schedule on the old county road.
November ore shipments reached 4250,942 tons, boosting the season total to 53,980,874 tons. Duluth led with 17,454,063 tons, Superior second, and Escanaba, Marquette, Ashland, and other ports contributing. October lake ore consumption rose 416,679 gross tons from September, with 33,081,772 tons on hand at furnaces November 1 and 6,472,840 at Lake Er ie docks, signaling a potentially large demand next season.
Mrs Arvid Santi daughter of Gust and Mrs Lehto dies at Grand View Hospital from tuberculosis. She was 18, survived by husband, seven month old daughter, one sister, and her parents. She lived in Ironwood after leaving this city a year and a half ago. Funeral held at Lutheran Church with Rev Korhonen in charge.
With only a few inches of snow and crisp weather, Sunday Lake forms a solid ice sheet suitable for skating across its entire area. Hundreds have enjoyed the conditions, spending several hours each evening on the lake as the unusual freeze persists.
The city commission did not convene this week due to a lack of quorum. Few items were on the agenda, with possible actions limited to formally accepting the new garage building from the contractor and minor discussion on a proposed ice rink and toboggan slide.

Most banks on the range adopt the plan except Iron Exchange Bank at Hurley. Additional charges include a 50 cent minimum loan fee, 25 cent minimum for collecting drafts from outside points, 25 cents for the first 100 dollars and 10 cents for each additional 100, 10 cents per hundred for stock and bond transactions over 2 dollars minimum 2.00, 10 cent coupon collection for coupons outside city limits, bank to pay registration mail and insurance, and ten cents per hundred for cashing outside checks by non-depositors.
Thousands of tiny ships under an inch long launch on Thanksgiving as the Michigan Tuberculosis Association distributes Christmas seals. The ships, bearing a red double barred cross, begin their journey inside envelopes and will later appear on backs of envelopes and various items. Purchasers have long used the penny stickers to decorate gifts, programs, bills, menus, and magazines.
Wakefield Wolverines face Ironwood Yellow Jackets Monday night to start the basketball season at the Community gymnasium. The week's schedule also includes Friday’s opener with Bergland, a frequent obstacle to Wakefield’s season records, signaling what could be a strong year for the high school cage team.

The party noted abundant deer signs and increasing wolves and coyotes affecting the deer population.
The Woman's club will meet at the Community Building next Wednesday at 2 30 PM. Mrs C W Benner, music committee chair, will supervise a short program. President Mrs E F W Neidhold urges members to donate Christmas toys for a box to be sent to orphanages in the state. A board of managers meeting is set for Monday at 7 30 PM.

High taxes inflate production costs, deter development, and threaten ore reserves. with new methods and regional cooperation, mining efficiency could improve if tax burdens are rebalanced without sacrificing state revenue.
