Wakefield set to begin 38 week school year this fall
John Thomas told the board of education that Wakefield schools open August 30 with teachers reporting that same day and classes starting September 1. Students will be assigned to rooms and the term will close June 3. A two day Thanksgiving recess and 15 days at Christmas plus three days at Easter are planned.

Golden wedding anniversary celebrated by Hyppa couple
More than 100 friends and neighbors attended the celebration for Mr. and Mrs. Matt Hyppa at their daughter Mrs. Thure Waltonen’s home. The event honored the couple’s church and social work with a short program and remarks. The Hyppas, married in Lapua Finland, came to the United States, then Wakefield in 1889, and later Canada where Mr. Hyppa lost an eye in a mine accident. Mrs. Hyppa is 79 and he 72. four of five children attended the party.

Two Miles of Pavement Laid on New US-2
About two miles of concrete pavement on the new US 2 will be completed Friday evening, state highway engineers say. Favorable weather aided the work and a large paving machine will near the north road on the city’s west edge. Paving continues into Bessemer and the road is expected to open in full by late October.

State appraiser failed to give a true estimate of Plymouth mine ore tonnage in 1945. Hearing Thursday afternoon set the mine value at 2,232,960 while the tax commission fixed 1,385,000.
