Elkton considers 4 percent bump in electric rates
Elkton Town Council opens first reading on a 4 percent electric rate increase. Mayor Davis says the town mainly passes along Dominion Virginia Power hikes. Residents including 80 year old Mildred Shifflett voice concern about the burden on seniors while some council members express resistance. A vote is set for the next meeting with July 1 as the effective date if approved.

Shenandoah Plans 17th Memorial Day Festival Activities
Shenandoah launches its 17th Memorial Day Festival with events across the town. From May 22 to May 24 activities include a carnival on Third Street with rides and games, a Friday cruz-in on First Street, a flag retirement at Veterans Park, a Saturday welcome booth, yard and bake sale, a Memorial Day ceremony at VFW Post 8613, and a Thanks USA Tennis Tournament at town courts. The tennis event features a potluck doubles format with a $5 registration and may last 2 to 3 hours.

Hodgins Reaches Final at ESU National Shakespeare Contest
Tatiana Hodgins of Elkton, student of Erica Williams at East Rockingham High, placed among 10 finalists in the 31st annual English Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition held May 5 at Lincoln Center Theater, New York City, with 58 winners from ESU Branch contests nationwide.

Forish Family Auto Honored By Elkton Officials
At the May 19 Elkton Town Council meeting Councilman Joshua Gooden presented Forish Family Auto Sales with the Elkton Downtown Revitalization Corporation and town business appreciation award. Established 1988 as Blue Ridge Auto Tech, the shop was acquired by the Forish family in 1998 to sell new and used vehicles and provide detailing. In 2006 it began selling teardrop campers and remains the state’s only such dealer in Virginia.

Morgan-Ridell to perform free concert at Skyline Café
Elkton area welcomes singer Morgan-Ridell in a Sunday 7 p.m. show at Skyline Café and Art in McGaheysville. The Nashville–Elkton native, known for portraying Patsy Cline in Elkton’s 2008 Centennial pageant, is studying music at Liberty University and aims to raise funds for a Nashville recording project.
