Skyline Drive Reopens After Rocky Mount Fire in Shenandoah
The Rocky Mount fire was fully contained after burning about 10 000 acres in Shenandoah National Park south of Elkton. Skyline Drive reopened at 6 p.m. Friday as fire command shifted to a smaller national park team. other park closures including parts of the Appalachian Trail remain. Open burn permits available from Harrisonburg and Rockingham officials. Virginia burn law remains in effect.

Water and sewer rates may rise in new budget
SHENANDOAH The town proposes a FY 2017 budget totaling 2.145 million dollars, down 32,815 from the previous year, with fee increases of 1 dollar per month for water and sewer services.

The town will raise water and sewer rates for the third consecutive year effective July 1, lifting a resident’s monthly bill from 39.30 to 41.30. Grottoes Hosts Firefighting Efforts In Rock Mount Fire
Grottoes volunteers manned the incident post at 109 West Third Street as more than 350 people came and went amid the Rocky Mount Fire. Rain helped suppress the blaze started April 16, with containment by April 29. The fire burned over 10,000 acres in Shenandoah National Park near the Gap Run drainage and Trail boundaries.
