Rocky Mount Fire in Shenandoah NP Tops 10,000 Acres
The Rocky Mount Fire in Shenandoah National Park southeast of Elkton grew to 10,300 acres and was 70 percent contained on Monday. Crews used water buckets from helicopters to dampen fuels after running 14,000 spheres to start controlled burns on Sunday. Weather remained hot and dry, hampering suppression efforts, while officials noted gains from recent rains but warned the fire is not yet out.
