Idea for Shenandoah National Park Began With Elkton Resident
A 1936 dedication ceremony at Big Meadows marked the official start of Shenandoah National Park as 34 miles of Skyline Drive opened. Elkton resident Robert J. Snapp first proposed a park for the region, guiding the east park idea from Mas annuttan to the Blue Ridge with backing from Gov. E. Lee Trinkle and Sen. Harry F Byrd. The Buy an Acre program under D P Wine mobilized private donations, with Virginia communities contributing up to ten thousand dollars.
