Fading Images of Elkton Wig Wag Signal 1946
A 1946 view of downtown Elkton shows the Wig Wag traffic signal used by the Norfolk & Western Railroad to stop traffic while trains pass. Invented in 1909, implemented in 1914, Elkton’s device operated from the 1930s to the early 1960s before a dual cross arm signal replaced it. A yellow and black stop sign was once held by a bystander to halt cars. The Elkton Restaurant, Kite Drug Store and Hickman's ESSO are visible in the scene.
