Figgatt Wins Leadership Award at Spotswood High
Harrisonburg student Sarah Figgatt accepted the Daily News Record Leadership Award last Thursday. A future University of Pennsylvania student, she graduates near 18 with a 4.259 GPA, ranking eighth in a class of 220. She founded My Alpha Theta and participated in STARS and track activities.

Kinsey chosen for FBI youth leadership program
Sarah Kinsey a 17 year old rising senior at East Rockingham High School was selected for the FBI National Academy youth leadership program in Quantico The nine day program begins June 18 and includes leadership classes and running the Yellow Brick Road obstacle course on a Marine base Kinsey is the daughter of Glen and Donna Kinsey and one parent must have attended the FBI National Academy in the past Kinsey described the experience as the opportunity of a lifetime.

Elkton pours footers for decorative streetlights at Town hall
Public Works Director Troy Shifflett and staff pour six footers for decorative streetlights on Rockingham Street near Elkton Municipal Building. Two lights already exist at the Elkton Area Community Center, Conrad's Store and the First Responders 9/11 Memorial in Stonewall Memorial Park. Four more footers await future expansion. A concrete slab for a new decorative park bench, part of Eagle Scout Samuel Price's project, was installed nearby. Price will set the bench and add landscaping soon.

New Grottoes Budget Seeks Rate Hikes and Budget Cut
Grottoes Town Council plans a fiscal 2015 budget of 3.8 million, down from 4.6 million, with increases to cigarette taxes and water and sewer rates for some users. The council must approve by June 30 before the new fiscal year begins July 1, addressing the proposal at the June 9 meeting at 7 p.m. at 601 Dogwood Ave.

Baccalaureate service at ERHS kicks off graduation activities
Twenty one soon to be graduates received a prayer and blessing Sunday night at ERHS during a baccalaureate service. Organizers started the event four years ago when the school opened. Tammy and Tim Wood and Jim and Sandra Bebber organized it originally, with Mike and Chrissy Secrist joining this year. Sponsored by the Parent Teacher Student Association.

Scenic paint brightens West Spotswood Ave building
Elkton shows a brighter street scene after Eric Dearing 35 painted 183 W Spotswood Ave. for his father Lee Dearing 65. Lee, longtime Dearing Home Improvement owner, remodeled the building and rents the upstairs as an efficiency. He hopes the art will draw a new downstairs business, vacant for about a decade. A senior home bench nearby will now overlook the painted facade.
