Virus changes hog shows at Virginia county fairs
The PEDV outbreak forces Rockingham and Shenandoah County fairs to convert market hog shows into terminal shows with hogs sold for slaughter. Suckling piglets will be banned this year, breeding pigs restricted, pig scrambles proceed, and enhanced sanitation and biosecurity measures implemented at fairgrounds. The Rockingham fair runs Aug 11–16 and Shenandoah Aug 22–30.

Visitors decline hits Shenandoah as park visits fall
A National Park Service report shows Shenandoah National Park drew 1.14 million visitors in 2013, spending 72.4 million in nearby communities and supporting 889 local jobs. The drop from 2012 stems largely from the October government shutdown, with lodging and food driving most spending. Virginia totals mirrored a nationwide dip in park visits and revenue.
