Shenandoah Fire and Rescue will host its third annual poker run on Saturday to raise funds for extra extrication gear. Entry fees are 15 dollars per bike and 5 dollars per rider. More than 50 door prizes totaling 2500 dollars will be awarded. Additional prizes for best hand 200 dollars, second best 100 dollars, and worst hand 50 dollars. A meal is included after the ride.
Fire Chief Andrew Holloway and volunteers prepared fried chicken and other foods at Mountain View Park for the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department annual lawn party in Rockingham County. The event underscores the department’s community fundraising drive as 60 percent of its roughly $270000 annual budget comes from such revenue.
Elkton residents will see sidewalk and street upgrades over the next several weeks. A sidewalk project along Old Spotswood Trail from 5th to 1st Streets starts July 21 and will take about 30 days at an estimated cost of $25,000. Additional paving on East Rockingham, 5th and North streets and the Stonewall Memorial Park area is planned, beginning August 18 for about 30 days, costing around $200,000 with state funds covering most costs. The Virginia Department of Transportation also plans paving on Old Spotswood Trail this month.
Shane Bell and Stacie Allen opened Lobsta Rollin a small restaurant in the Village of the Valley shopping center on U S 33. Specializing in lobster and seafood, most sales will be carryout though indoor and outdoor seating is available. The expansion joins Perfect 10 Nail Salon Lela's Boutique Jack Brown's and Log Cabin restaurants and Autodealz. SEE ROLLIN, PAGE 5.
Cecil Ire Shifflett, 44, of Elkton, pleaded guilty in U S District Court in Harrisonburg to felony conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine and a felony firearm charge after a 45 minute chase last summer. He faces up to life with a 15 year mandatory minimum. Three others indicted Feb 6 in the same conspiracy pleaded guilty the prior Tuesday. Ismael Alonso Mariano, 30, address unknown, also pleaded guilty to felony conspiracy.
