McGaheysville Lawn Party marks 51st annual event
The McGaheysville Volunteer Fire Company hosts a three day lawn party July 21 to 23 with activities for all ages. Friday features a Firefighters Parade at 7 p.m. on McGaheysville Road from the elementary school to Village Market. A Miss and Master Beauty Pageant starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, arm band night. Saturday includes a tractor pull at 4 p.m. and a 7 to 11 p.m. set by Rewind, followed by a 10 p.m. fireworks show behind the fire hall on U.S. 33 and Stover Drive. Pre-registration is not required.

Elkton Police move to temporary quarters after pipe flood
A burst water pipe flooded the Elkton Municipal Building basement delaying occupancy. Public Works Director Troy Shifflett says the bathroom break is being reviewed with the insurer, with the Police Department relocated to the Elkton Area Community Center on Blue and Gold Drive. Police Chief Aaron Hammer notes a call box outside town hall remains operational.

Combat Veterans Association to visit Shenandoah VFW post
At the July 12 Shenandoah Town Council meeting, Combat Veterans Association plans a 1 p.m. Saturday visit to Avis O. Comer VFW Post 8613 to raise funds for veterans. Police Chief Davis said arrangements were made months ago. Also approved Troop 46 overnight camping Aug 20 at Shenandoah River Park and authorized a $14,181.61 transfer to pay invoices for 10th Street well pump repairs.

Tax date shift eyed for Grottoes real estate taxes
GROTTOES Council approved the first reading to change due dates for real estate and personal property taxes from December 5 to February 5, 2017, to give staff more time to process bills and save about $700. Town Manager Jeff Nicely noted the second reading next month could finalize the plan. Also announced is the GVFD lawn party July 27-30 at Mountain View Park, with a parade July 29 and live music each day featuring the Jerry Wimmer Trio, Southern Grace, Tim and Dillon Nicely, and Tommy.

Fire damages McGaheysville business complex
A Friday night blaze at 9986 Bond Lane in McGaheysville caused up to 160000 dollars in damage to multiple buildings in a business complex. Eight fire departments and a rescue squad responded after a caller reported a fire in one of six structures. No injuries were reported. The fire began in a wood workshop where an extension cord being weighed down by items likely caused the incident.
