Elkton appoints Gerry Comer to vacant council seat
Elkton in a 4-0 vote appoints Gerry Bootie Comer, 57, to fill the vacancy after Wayne Printz became mayor. The council rezones 11 Quail Run lots to B-2 for Rite Aid relocation near Elkton Plaza. A 3.5 acre Tannery Apartments rezoning is tabled amid floodplain concerns. Planning Commission will reconvene February 3.

Elkton Police seek information on two incidents. A coin machine containing about 1500 dollars was stolen from Elkton Laundromat at 401 W Spotswood Trail between 8 p.m. Jan 6 and 6:15 a.m. Jan 7. Stonewall Memorial Park at 200 N Terrace Ave suffered vandalism between Jan 9 and 12, damaging the park sign, south shelter lights, a picnic table, 18 playground pickets and a wooden trash crate. Forest Knolls development moves forward in Shenandoah
Matt Yoder plans to promote Forest Knolls subdivision by selling about 35 vacant lots after the town lifted a moratorium on water and sewer connections and zoning permits at the Jan 18 Shenandoah council meeting. High Knoll Terrace and Locust Dale Loop were repaved by Edwards and Sons, Inc. to meet Virginia DOT requirements. The subdivision sits north of town across US 340 from North Side Diner and Lily of the Valley Independent Church.

Battle of the Bands heads to Grottoes for summer fundraiser
Grottoes volunteers host Battle of the Bands at Mountain View Park from 4 to 8 p.m. June 27 featuring six to eight bands with 30 minute sets. Alcohol will be sold in a roped area or tent, two town officers will patrol at $20 per hour, and the event includes family attractions like face painting and a bounce house. The fundraiser replaces the canceled Spring Festival.
