Elkton Town Council advanced its meeting agenda after a work session. Elkton added funds for the Monger memorial and approved hiring a new police officer. The town reported increases in programs and new members at the Elkton Area Community Center and discussed January police activity.
Tatiana Hodgins, a freshman at East Rockingham High School, captured first prize among seven Virginia students in the Lexington District ESU contest held at Staunton's Blackfriars Playhouse. She performed Lady Macbeth’s monologue and Shakespeare’s sonnet Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day, after two years of drama training and a school competition.
Elkton officials and crews cleared streets during a record snow event. Town Manager Kevin Whitfield said 44 hours of snow removal reduced street impact while sidewalks saw drifting snow. Mayor Roy Davis commended planning and execution after meeting department heads.
Shenandoah Volun teer Fire Company applies to hold bingo at the community center to fund NFPA compliant upgrades. Food will be served and the council approves the application during the Feb 11 meeting. The mayor may sign a contract for a pictorial history book. Water leaks and alley ruts noted with actions planned. A gravel work order for Cover stone alley near Housden residence requested. Maryland Avenue drainage issue to be fixed.
East Rockingham High School sophomore Kyle Nickel stars as Richie Cunningham in Hap py Days A New Musical. Nickel, 16, says the family friendly show is his favorite so far and enjoys the upbeat opening song. Choral director Terri Butler notes the musical is nearly brand new to the area.
Elkton natives Fay Baugher and Kay Davis launch Twins Barber Shop at 303 West Old Spotswood Trail, just west of Bank of America and in front of Pucks to Pigskins sports lounge. Baugher, with a Harrisonburg shop background, trains Davis in a family business aimed at male haircuts priced at 8 dollars with shaves also 8 and a board trim 5.
