Grottoes Considers Allowing UTVs On Town Streets

Grottoes Town Council voted to amend the golf cart ordinance to include utility terrain vehicles after a citizen request. A UTV would require a $10 registration fee, inspection, valid license, and proof of insurance. First and second readings are planned in March and April. The council also set a public hearing for March 15 to rezone 2 acres at 8th Street and Dogwood Avenue from B1 to R3, linked to the sale of the old silk mill property by the Maury Sr. estate.

History up close Elkton student tours World War I and II sites

Jordan Biller, a 21 year old Elkton resident and Bridgewater College senior, joined 25 classmates on a three week educational trip to Great Britain France and Belgium. The interim session history class required daily journals and papers to explore cultural views of World Wars I and II. They visited Omaha Beach near Normandy where Allied forces landed in June 1944 to begin the campaign to free Western Europe from Nazi Germany.

ERMA Food Pantry marks 28 years of service in area

Since 1967 the East Rockingham Ministerial Association pantry has grown from five families to aiding 50 to 70 people monthly. Located at Grottoes United Methodist Church, it serves sw Rockingham and parts of Augusta County with weekly Monday distributions. More than a dozen churches back the effort. meals rely on Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and Grottoes Food Lion donations. Contact Nancy Layne at 249-5893 for details.

Elkton Town Council postpones meeting to Feb 29

Elkton Town Council meeting moved from Feb 15 to Monday Feb 29. Public hearings at 6:15 and 6:30 p.m. on Feb 29 address changes to definitions for transitional living centers and living quarters and the issuance of 3.1 million dollars in bonds to upgrade the wastewater treatment plant, the second of four capital-improvement phases under a consent order with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

Stables at Six Penny Farm Wins Renewable Energy Grant

The Stables at Six Penny Farm received a 19223 grant to install a 45.6 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system. The rural development office in Virginia announced the award as part of 107500 in grants to seven rural businesses and one individual for energy projects. Recipients must cover at least 75 percent of project costs.
