Elkton approves UTV use and hires part time officer
Elkton council unanimously approved a second reading to allow utility terrain vehicles on town streets. The town will require registration, inspection, a valid license and proof of insurance. The council also hired Spotswood High graduate Jeffrey Gooden as a part time officer and noted a new Ford Interceptor Utility replaces the K-9 vehicle, with operation in three weeks. Vice Mayor Holloway says Grand Caverns will host a Back to School Pool Party from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday August 20 with music and games for kids. A community yard sale is planned for Saturday September 10, followed by a September 11 memorial event at the Grottoes Volunteer Fire Department.

Beldor Hollow Home Memorial Moves from Lost Site
Stones from two chimneys of the Peter Wyant home built in the 1790s and burned on October 31, 2013, are donated to Rockingham County Blue Ridge Heritage Project by Louise Heatwole of Bridgewater. The home and 135 acres at 4535 Belder Road were purchased in 1992. Wyant was a Hessian soldier captured at Saratoga and later escaped in 1781. See memorial, page 9.

Protest Over 199-Foot Verizon Tower Near Three Leagues
Three Leagues Road residents protested a proposed 199 foot cell tower on Aug 10 before Rockingham County Supervisors. The board tabled the special use permit until Sept 24 to allow Verizon to answer questions or modify the plan, with District 5 supervisor Mike Breeden moving the postponement. Verizon plans to use Three Leagues Road to access land south of the subdivision on Hodge Lane.
