Mold forces closure of Elkton Municipal Building

Elkton officials closed the historic Elkton Municipal Building after mold was found throughout the structure. An emergency meeting on Aug 3 resulted in a 4-0 vote to relocate staff to the Elkton Area Community Center on Aug 4, with about half of the equipment moved by Monday.

Elkton town leaders debated three pathways after mold forced staff relocation to the Elkton Area Community Center. They considered remodeling the municipal building, expanding the EACC, or purchasing a modular structure as interim or permanent work space.

Twirling Medallions rise from Elkton majorette tradition

Elkton native Tina Hughes has long steered the Twirling Medallions group, founded in 1970 as the Hughes. Now coaching since 1983, she trains about 50 performers at Elkton Middle School June through November. The club includes three majorette divisions and a marching mom corps, plus color guard and drum corps led by Jason Forish for two decades.

Stony Run bridge replacement begins in Harrisonburg area

VDOT will close Cave Hill Road between Jacob Burner Drive and Cemetery Road to replace the Stony Run bridge. A temporary detour bridge and stop-and-proceed zone will be used. Crews started preliminary work last week with full replacement starting Aug. 15, at an estimated cost of 218000 dollars. Work should finish by mid October, weather permitting.

GT's Smoke Wagon comes to town in Shenandoah

Shenandoah resident Gary Thacker Jr. has brought GT's Smoke Wagon to town, parking between Shenandoah General Store and Karen's Frozen Delights on Maryland Avenue. He previously operated near Food Lion in Harrisonburg and at Elkton Car Wash on Saturdays, cooking beef, pork, and chicken with smoked sides and pies.

Elkton farm stand expands with baked goods and produce

The Holdeman Mennonite couple relocated to Elkton in 2014 and expanded their five bedroom Bear Lithia Spring area home with a small building to grow the farm stand. They offer sweet corn, green beans, potatoes, squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, cantaloupe, watermelon and farm eggs at 2.50 per dozen. Open 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with Wednesday and Friday hours after corn is harvested in early October for baked goods orders.
