Elkton Downtown 1908 Photo Highlights Fire Destruction
A 1908 Elkton postcard by Frank P. Hammers shows downtown Elkton facing northeast from West Marshall Ave. Many buildings had already burned or been torn down. Structures include a two story general store later converted to living quarters, the Elkton Passenger Station opened 1907, and the old depot from 1880-81. Nearby stood the 1905 Elkton Graded School with a 1915 addition, the Elkton Methodist Church later remodeled, and a three story hotel formerly Runkles, later Virginia and Blue Grey Hotel, then Frazier's apartments. Other sites include J L Armentrout Meat Market and Bear Chemical Company with Bear's Emulsion. Multiple fires and razings continued into the 1970s including the Oasis Restaurant in 1971.
