Shenandoah police report a white male suspect was apprehended near Stanley by Sgt. Ryan Dean shortly after the Pioneer Bank robbery at 511 S. Third St. in Shenandoah occurred at 11 17 a m. The capture followed bank alarm and pursuit through the area.
The annual Elkton Field Day parade took place Saturday morning with participants marching along Old Spotswood Trail West Spotswood Avenue and Stuart Avenue to Blue Ridge Park. East Rockingham High School marching band led the route as youngsters gathered candy, with additional parade photos on page 6. Photos by Joshua Gooden.
Winners announced from the 2014 Elkton Field Day pageants with a Little Angel division for girls 6 to 11 months. Madelyn Lawson won overall, with Ella Hensley as first runner up and Aslynn Life as second runner up. Bella Rae Lorraine Myers earned third runner up.
Mark Armentrout recalls starting with a 1966 GMC dump truck and a backhoe, the town’s only vehicles, forty years ago. Today Shenandoah’s public works operates four dump trucks, three pickups, a one ton truck, and a backhoe, which he has helped equip and maintain. He recently celebrated his anniversary and was honored by the town.
The Kite family from Comertown Road near Shenandoah is a longtime gospel music fixture. Patched with Bill and Pauline guiding six boys and two girls, the clan formed a performing quartet with harmonies across four parts. Members vary by show, but core singers include Bill Fred Dave and Gene with occasional appearances by Jim Becky and Libby as guests.
Page County School Board accepts the abrupt resignation of Superintendent Donna Power in a closed session. Power retires effective immediately, nearly a year before her 30 month contract would have expired on June 30, and Whitley-Smith is slated to assume the go-to role for now.
