The Workingman's Conference at St John’s Church Sunday voiced demand for a colored councilman in the 18th Ward. Horace J. Suddéuth urged colored citizens to elect a trusted candidate, while J M Tadlock defended party ties and criticized local papers, highlighting tensions in the ward’s political shift.
In a letter, Dabney accuses Tadlock of misrepresenting tenure with The Union, noting a four year discrepancy given The Union’s 16 years existence. The writer defends Tadlock, praises loyalty to the race, and pledges to extend charitable bequests while Tadlock handles future notices for The Union.
New York reports Garvey movement tensions as Marcus Garvey, called his excellency, faces charges after John Arthur George sells Black Star Steamship stock in Danville. Virginia denies a public hearing for stock sale while Garvey promotes a Liberian loan and mass membership, claiming millions connected to the movement and enterprises including the Black Star Steamship Co and Negro Factories Association.
Rev. G Stewart, High Chancellor, states he manages all funds of the Improvement Association and reports 1,000,000 in collectable assets. He notes daily receipts average 3,000, lists government officers’ annual salaries from 2,500 to 16,000, and mentions disposal of 00,000 in Black Star Stock and 400,000 in Negro Factories stock.
