Port Jervis board picks Richards amid stormy session
The Port Jervis Central School Board adopted a $1.85 million budget and named Edsyl W. Richards to replace the late John Monahan on the board. Richards placed fourth in a May election as Edmond S. Parsloe and others filled the other seats amid charges of political maneuvering. The budget totals and tax rate, plus salary debates for top administrators, dominated a contentious July planning session. Six nearby districts join Port Jervis on July 1, broadening the tax base by about $600,000 as the board eyes reorganization and future hires.

Port council approves city hall plan in vacant school
The Port Jervis Common Council approved preliminary drawings by architect Milton Holtzman to convert the vacant Church Street Elementary School into a city hall and community center. Mayor James E. Cole cautioned that approval is not final and noted plans for a two Democrats two Republicans human relations committee after a labor inter racial inquiry request from Rev. Lewis S. Stewart. The council also budgeted a 10 735 emergency note for a new street sweeper, declined a 9 000 NY Automobile Club traffic light proposal, and referred parking meter placement on Hammond Street to the police committee while weighing store front meters.
