Beckwith Charged With Murder of Medgar Evers in Mississippi

Byron De La Beckwith, 42, a White Citizens Council member and anti-integration activist, is charged with first degree murder in the ambush slaying of NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers. FBI traces a telescopic rifle sight to Beckwith and fingerprints on the weapon. He faces federal conspiracy charges over depriving Evers of constitutional rights. The arrest ends an intensive manhunt that began when Evers was shot on June 12. The case follows broader regional protests and demonstrations across the South amid ongoing desegregation tensions.
