Inflation slows pace in May as purchasing power fails
May CPI shows a 0.6 percent rise with meat prices down 0.1 percent and food costs up 1 percent. Despite easing in some food and energy items, overall inflation remains elevated with consumer buying power falling 0.3 percent in May and rents up 0.4 percent, underscoring persistent price pressures and the Nixon administration's price freeze policy.
Stein Sets Tone for Phase IV Economic Controls
Washington bureau Chief Herbert Stein of the Council of Economic Advisers outlined Phase IV of the administration's stabilization plan after the price freeze. He said food prices will rise very little once the freeze ends and that government price controls will apply to retail gasoline as well. The plan, described in a 12 page paper, aims to clarify tactics and indicate future measures including a shift from freeze to ceiling pricing. Some industries may see prices rise while others remain capped as the economy adjusts. The freeze could end sooner than the planned 60 days, possibly in a piecemeal lift.
