Campaign to end war fails, Mansfield predicts
Washington dispatch reports a national campaign to force Congress to end Indochina war as Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield warns it will likely fail. The effort centers on Hatfield McGovern amendment to cut funds for Vietnam troops after December 31 with 40 solid votes and 12 potential supporters. A showdown vote may occur around June 22 as Mansfield says victory hinges on presidential action and views the House as unlikely to approve.
