Tass reported the Lwana-8 probe failed to touch down softly on the moon after reaching the surface at 4:51 PM EST. The loss ends two hours of silence and marks another setback in the USSR's attempts to achieve the first soft landing on the lunar surface, though Tass said the flight still advanced the effort.
In Moscow and England reports differed on Luna-8 final touchdown timing as the probe failed to signal after approaching the moon. Bernard Lovell of Jodrell Bank said the craft likely destroyed itself. Soviet officials pegged touchdown at 9:51 p.m. local time with minimal signals received.
The report covers the northern Pacific Coast to the northern Rockies with a few snow flurries in the Great Lakes area. Warmer conditions are forecast from the northern Great Plains to the upper Mississippi valley and Great Lakes, while the north and middle Atlantic stay colder.
