Civic Club members meet Monday to discuss value to unity and a stronger year. Proposals to open membership were deferred to the board which is to craft a concrete program and an official slate of workers to reunite retail and industrial sectors. Continued on Page 5.
The last day for the $1.50 yearly subscription passes as the new rates take effect tomorrow. Within 50 miles the rate rises to $2 yearly and $2.50 outside. advance payments for multiple years are encouraged. Delinquents are dropped monthly and no exceptions will be made.
A complaint accuses Harold Black alias Claude Harper of obtaining property under false pretences after he allegedly fleeced Cheyenne county farmer John Volkman of 600 bushels of corn. Sheriff Schulz says identification is positive but arrest not yet made. Black’s truck is seized in Greeley Colorado. The annual New Years Eve dance is set for the city auditorium this evening. It is an independent promotion by Hank Barker and his orchestra. A carnival atmosphere with serpentine confetti noise makers paper hats and festive items is planned for the occasion.
Kenny Austin a former local favorite suffered a third round knockout by Bruce Brown in Kansas City Saturday night. Austin required medical assistance for several hours, with reports listing his age as 23. The Central City fighter, though age 23 in press notes, is viewed as a capable boxer against lighter opposition.
Sheriff Schulz said he turned over a fugitive to Lincoln police Sunday after being picked up at the request of capitol city officers. The man, Harold Bills, is wanted for non support. He was held here Saturday night and turned over to Lincoln men early Sunday.
The Telegraph Publishing Company and Record Publishing Company reached a full settlement last week ending a slander suit. The Cheyenne County Record’s December 27 issue stated that a prior statement about advertising rates had been made recently.
Sidney's 1936 basketball team faces a tough non conference test when Sterling visits for a Saturday night game. Sterling, a top Colorado squad last year, has a strong lineup again. Sidney has lost its only game but shows improvement under Coach Reed, who cautions the odds may be steep against Sterling.
In Cheyenne county the first baby born in 1936 will receive a $5 bank account from Fox Theat re Manager Carl Smith said yesterday. He will accept the doctor's certificate for the exact hour and minute of birth and asks parents to notify if a baby is born on or near January 1 to identify the first youngster of 1936.
Two panhandle districts numbered 9 and 10 merged creating a single 14 county district with a central head office. Ed Jordan becomes supervisor over north and east counties including Box Butte Thomas Hooker Grant Dawes Sioux and Sheridan. A northern Chadron HQ covers Dawes and north half of Sioux and Sheridan. Russell Hand moves to Chadron from Crawford, which closed. The reemployment service expands for WPA work but reduces overall Western force. The new district also covers Scotts Bluff Banner Kimball Cheyenne Morrill Garden and Deuel under Jordan and others.
Cheyenne county farmers are promised new opportunities in 1936. H F Bauman of the Resettlement Administration in Sidney says relief rolls can be replaced by honest work through land improvement and federal loans for seed feed and equipment. Since the office opened, 66 families have benefited via resettlement programs.
A special election is set in Chappell to decide if bonds should be issued to cover damage to property owners from a proposed viaduct over the Union Pacific right of way. The project is among 26 Nebraska viaducts funded with federal overhead passes and state grants.
The Sidney Greyhounds fail to start their season with two postponed or canceled games. A week earlier bad ice forced a postponement against Laramie, while a Fort Collins trip collapsed for lack of players drawing sharp criticism from fans and hockey circles. The team had a strong record last season and faced doubt after Sundays disruption.
Representative Coffee of Chadron said in Washington that gains in agricultural purchasing power must be retained for prosperity. He and Mrs. Coffee returned from a Mexico and south honeymoon trip and expect better country conditions than a year ago. Coffee aims to keep agricultural gains during the upcoming session and remains on the house agriculture committee. He believed the Supreme Court would not invalidate the AAA.
William Henry Stephens, 90, veteran captain who never lost a ship or cargo in 35 years at the helm, died after a week of illness. Born in England, he sailed half a century before settling in America and earned a British commander's certificate in 1900. He captained the Isobel Helen in 1877 from Cadiz to St Johns in 13 days. Funeral held yesterday from the Gehrigeu chapel.
A prominent Sidney couple, Mr. and Mrs. H. Straight, observed their fifty years of marriage quietly on Tuesday December 24. Thirteen children are scattered from Iowa to California, so a reunion was impossible, but they received gifts and letters from their offspring. The pair married in Rede Oak Iowa in 1885 and lived in Montgomery county before moving to Wayne then Cheyenne and finally retiring to Sidney.

Two long time Cheyenne county pioneers died within a week narrowing the ranks of early settlers. Joseph E. Trinnier once a Sidney man died in a Denver hospital. He had been employed at the county courthouse and knew many early residents. George L. Baker a Cheyenne county rancher for 30 years died at his home in Cheyenne. He is survived by his widow two daughters four sons two sisters four brothers and was well known in Sidney.
Nebraska counties share 4 946 166 in social security funds through July 1 1937. Cheyenne County receives 36552 with 22663 for old age pensions and 7969 for relief. Other Panhandle totals listed. state funds spread across old age pensions, relief, blind pensions, aid to dependent children, crippled children, and child welfare. G F Liebendorfer addressed the chamber of commerce outlining school cost comparisons. He emphasized education on tax matters and noted Sidney’s levy divides about one third for bond and interest retirement and two thirds for operation. College students home for vacation were guests of the Rotary club at the annual student dinner Friday night. Twenty eight students joined the usual members for an evening that featured a reading by Suzanne Tewell, tap dancing by Dorothy and Beulah Brewer, and vocal solos by radio star Franklin Hornaday.
