Bishop Beecher recalls Fort Sidney memories on 20th anniversary
Bishop George Allen Beecher marks twenty years as Episcopal bishop in western Nebraska with a Hastings observance. His wife Florence is hospitalized after a car crash near Ansley. Beecher’s early ministry started at Christchurch Sidney in 1893 with missionary travels across Cheyenne Banner and Kimball counties. He served as chaplain to the 21st infantry and aided Indian communities, later moving to North Platte where he befriended railroad workers and once helped fire a westbound engine during a blizzard.

First threshing machine in county half a century ago
The hum of a threshing machine was first heard in Cheyenne county fifty years ago in the Lodgepole valley. N M Fitch, a leading rancher, conducted the early experiment with a mechanical harvester on his ranch now owned by Nels Olson and sons. The Lodgepole valley soil showed promise for farming as well as grazing, with oats crops sown in 1879 and later harvested after irrigation and rains. The Sutherland boys hauled their threshing machine to Fitch’s stack yard and threshing concluded Friday.
