The county AAA wheat adjustment program begins contract filings for farmers who grew wheat on land they occupy during 1930 to 1932. A detailed schedule lists filing times and locations across Lodgepole, Huntsman, Bunker Hill, and Gurley precincts with specific start times and dates.
The First Infantry team from Fort Warren won the outdoor Sidney Rifle Club invitation shoot with 1151 points, edging the 20th Infantry by one. Sergeant Paldanack led the champions with 236, Captain Hamblin led the 20th Infantry with 234, and M. F. Stauffer of the U. P. Athletic Club topped individuals with 237. The 2nd 20th Infantry team placed fourth with 1187, while the Sidney team fielded only four shooters. Grand aggregate honors went to A. M. Hoover of Cheyenne.
Governor Bryan rejected bids on ten bituminous mat highway projects opened last week and announced plans to start two more. One will go to the low bidder, the other to the state highway department pending federal approval. Western Asphalt Paving of Sioux City bid 29344.09 for 10.8 miles between Anselmo and Linscott in Custer County, against an estimate of 29655. The other project east and west of Potter in Cheyenne County drew 36029 from Hargreave Construction of Cedar Rapids. Gravel work will begin this fall with gravel mixed with oil next spring to provide local employment and cover a portion of labor costs.
The state treasurer disclosed a cash surplus due to bank deposit requirements before the bank guaranty law. Total cash on hand and in banks is 4,589,000, up from 4,283,853.59 last month. On hand are 623,300 in United States treasury notes, 495,704.03 in notes, and 210,992 in hard cash and checks, with 1,200,090 in government bonds.
Twenty two Sidney Rotarians traveled to Chappell Thursday night and defeated Chappell Rotary in softball 9 to 4 before attending the weekly dinner. Leo Bischoff, Chapell state highway engineer and former Sidney resident, spoke on the planned highway project in this section of the state.
The county democrats central committee urges the Lorenzo post office be restored as farmers rely on it to market perishable produce. They argue closing the office would harm local agriculture and community service.
City engineer and city attorney planned to confer after noon on applying to the Public Works Board for financial aid on District No. 3 improvement work. Encouraged by Union’s similar approval, officials hope federal funds will defray about thirty percent of the cost through an emergency fund appropriation.
The Presbyterian Circle staged An Old Family Album showing authentic fashions for men and women from 1849 to 1902. Individual and family groups, including several gay nine ties period outfits, drew large crowds and provided convulsing humor over two nights. The stage framed as a picture frame added a playful touch.
Daltonites reported two girls saw a porcupine resting in a lower tree limb in front of the Armath residence. C J Carley awoke to shine a light on the animal as it climbed to an upper branch. The next morning several quills were found at the tree base as evidence of the creature’s overnight stay.
Wenoco Oilers lose two straight in the Scottsbluff tournament as Murphy of Scottsbluff defeats them 11 to 1 and Western Public Service wins 4 to 1. The Oilers had beaten both clubs earlier in the year but were off form on Sunday.
Four people injured, two critically, when a sedan driven by Mrs. Robert Goder of Glen dale California crashed into a concrete guard rail a mile east of Potter last Thursday. The injuries include skull fracture and internal injuries to three passengers. Mrs. Goder and Lois Sutton remain seriously injured but alive after emergency surgery. Witnesses said a rear tire was flat.
State Treasurer Hall disbursed 248 926.56 in gasoline tax money to counties ahead of schedule due to cash on hand. Next distribution may not occur until September 17 as funds arrive slowly after the 12th. Tax receipts up to the 17th totaled 670 430.19 with refunds 6 626.03. counties share 134 cents per 4 cents collected. Scotts Bluff led western counties with 5498.93. Cheyenne 2108.06. Deuel 833.83. Kimball 101.35. Morrill 1543.36.
The Gurley business men's association, dormant for months, held a meeting Friday to reorganize. W. L. Elswick was elected president, Chas. Gabriel vice president, and Lynn Cunningham secretary treasurer. A number of committees were appointed.
Gurley merchants plan dates and program for their annual fall festival. With the county fair not held, Sidney residents will travel to Gurley for a day of festivities. Last year many Sidne yites enjoyed the Gurley celebration.
After three weeks of constant meetings and planning on beer licenses west Illinois street aid and improvement orders the city council met Friday evening and casually discussed results. Three sets of minutes were read and approved without vote as officials reviewed actions since July. Attendance had been heavy and observers watched the proceedings closely.
J E B L Carey aged 87 died at his Dalton home following a long life tied to the western settlement era. Born October 30 1845 in Careystown New York he moved to Iowa at nine and later joined his father hauling produce on the Mississippi. In 1879 he moved to Bancroft Nebraska entering cattle feeding and partnered with George H Ransom in Carey and Ransom a venture lasting forty years.
Governor Charles W. Bryan responds to the Cheyenne County Democratic Central Committee telegram protesting state land lease auctions. He says he will work with the Board of Educational Lands to comply, noting he was unaware of the action and hopes the order may be modified. Farmers have invested improvements on leased lands and worry about losing them if leases are sold.
Nebraska extension director W H Brokaw said the emergency purchasing program will start soon and run until about October 1. Secretary Wallace emphasized no price drop during the period. Packers will process at cost and coordinate with farmers to avoid market glut, with price tiers set for various pig weights.
County Agent Willey urges Cheyenne county farmers to accept the wheat acreage allotment plan and to participate in selecting a county committee. He notes the unit will be farmer managed and that volunteer committee members are preferred to avoid funds draining from the county. The temporary committee appointed to explain the plan will receive compensation and then retire.
The chamber of commerce receives NRA authority to appoint a committee to investigate violations in Sidney once a county general is named by Richard Metcalfe of Omata. Several complaints exist, but no authorized official is in place yet, allowing violations to flourish until action is taken.
Albert L. Bates, arrested in Denver last week for Urschel kidnapping and Kansas City station massacre links to a nine year earlier Bushnell bank raid. A man calling himself George Harris matched Bates in description after the Bushnell robbery attempt at The American State Bank. Harris, an escaped Utah convict, was returned to Salt Lake City. Bates reportedly served time in Utah and companion Thomas J. Tracy died from gunshot wounds after capture. The third bandit, George Kelly, was sent to Nebraska state prison.
Military authorities announce one hundred vacancies in field artillery and infantry at Fort Francis E. Warren Wyoming. Healthy men with no dependents and good education will be enlisted immediately. Applicants must be of high calibre and provide references from well known citizens of their community.
Players rejoiced and customers sighed as the final softball games were completed on Friday evening. Many performers were wearied and ready to quit earlier, and officials plan a smaller faster league next year.
Kimball's Longhorns beat Peetz 7 to 6 in a late rally to hand Logan county a third straight defeat and unsettle the Wheat Belt standings. EZ Marratt pitched steady ball as Reader, Noyes, and Swanson produced key hits in the final frame.
Harold Hedges of the Nebraska college reports the farm price index rose 12 points in July to 76 percent of prewar levels. Wheat prices steady to lower, corn hogs higher, cattle steady to firm. butter and egg prices likely to rise. poultry outlook uncertain.
Pieces believed to be meteor fragments from the August 8 sighting were found at the C. H. Dechert farm near Scottsbluff Nebraska. The grayish porous fragments show evidence of intense heat and were located by worker Pedro Hernandez in a potato field about a mile from the Dechert home. Sounds and smoke from the meteor were reported at the farm.
Horace Tindell appeared before County Judge Barlow and was bound over to district court on a wife abandonment charge. Mrs. Tindell said he deserted her and their baby last April 24 and provided nothing since. Tindell contests paternity. case set for next jury term.
A L Roberts of Chappell says he will leave August 26 for New York City to attend an antiwar conference. He will drive a truck to collect eighteen Nebraskans to join the session camping en route. Delegates include William Pritschau of Revenna Carl Wicklund of Loup City and Ruth Otley of Lincoln among others.
The Cheyenne County Farmers Holiday association invites the public to a picnic at Krueger's Lake on Thursday August 24. Speakers will discuss farm loan and mortgage setups and other important information for farmers and their families.
The Democratic Central Committee met last Wednesday night and recommended Earl R. Kratz as attorney and John McCleneghan as appraiser for the Home Owners Loan Corporation in this county. No announcements have been made by Charles Smrha, head of the Nebraska district.
