Colonel Walter L Steele, LL D and former North Carolina congressman, died at Johns Hopkins Hospital aged 69. He led Pee Dee Manufacturing of Rockingham and chaired UNC trustees, a key state figure and former legislator who helped shape secession policy and state institutions.
