A large Exposition crowd witnessed the Great Educational Day events with talks by W T Harris and George T Winston. The program highlighted education industry and Northern Carolina exhibits. Copper ore from Granville County and NC gems loaned by W S Primrose drew interest as part of ongoing displays.
The Last Days of Pompeii played at the Winston opera house to a large crowd with John Palmer and his company praised. Raleigh audiences will see it next Monday and Tuesday nights. A small fire at four this morning caused no serious damage. M A Vestal, former Yadkin county representative, leaves politics to preach the gospel and is described as a sincere speaker.
A patent medicine advertisement touts Simmons Liver Regulator as a universal cure citing widespread cures. The copy urges readers to take the remedy for various ailments and implies high efficacy without medical supervision.
In Winston Salem North Carolina on October 15 1900 James M Pendleton treasurer of the Twin City Club and telegraph manager fled with between one thousand and twelve hundred dollars from club funds. A letter to President Sheppard explains the loss as due to speculative ruin. An official will review the books tomorrow to determine the exact status while Pendleton owed dues collected yesterday. A local boy was run over by a train near the R and D freight depot resulting in the loss of his right leg above the knee.
A large gathering of Democrats from all wings met in the House of Commons for a harmony filled discussion of party needs. An addressing committee was formed including E. C. Smith T. J. Jarvis B. Alexander Elias Carr C. B. Watson E. A. Moye A. Leazar W. M. Robbins J. S. Bell and H. A. Gudger to craft a message for the Democratic party.
Secretary Rusk told a New York produce exchange committee that western stamped pork products could be re-examined at export ports if needed. A government inspector would supervise the reinspection and restamp any re-opened packages to protect foreign importers from substitution after packing.
Mr Walter H Page founder of the State Chronicle was in the city yesterday greeting friends on the streets and at the Exposition. A dinner complimentary to Mr Page was hosted by Josephus Daniels and the Chronicle stockholders. Page plans to visit his father in Aberdeen this afternoon.
The Peace Institute invites friends to visit from 10 to 12 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. today with the studio open all day Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Meanwhile U S Commissioner of Education W T Harris arrived yesterday and will speak at noon today at the Exposition after meeting educational leaders at the Yarborough.
The annual meeting adopted unanimous resolutions praising the exposition exhibits from South and other states. It lauds the displays as equal or superior to prior Southern Expositions and commends General Manager F B Chilton and Secretary John T Patrick. It notes visitors will see a compact view of the Souths resources and industrial progress, including the colored department exhibits.
This evening at Metropolitan Hall a concert features marked merit singers including Miss Nellie Waddell of Smithfield Miss Alice Dugger of Warrenton and Miss Nannette State of St Mary's School Raleigh Also appearing are Prof Lindall renowned cornet soloist Prof Prosho and Prof A Pauli Music lovers may expect a delightful performance.
Late yesterday David Rosenthal a clothing and men’s furnishing dealer made an assignment for the benefit of creditors to Isidore Rosenthal. Fourth class lists show major claims including L Rosenthal $10000 Hornthal Whitehead Weissman & Co New York $2977 Hammerslaugh Saks & Co New York $862 Lowenberg Pincus & Co Norfolk $369 A Cohen's Sons New York $591. Total liabilities said to exceed $15000.
Mrs. F A Daniels and son from Goldsboro visit. Exposition crowds: 12 000 yesterday with 800 Confederate veterans in line. Rev Sam Jones may lecture next week as business men plan a Richmond excursion. University students fill six street cars and the Capital Club hosts a ball. A wedding at Warrenton and various arrivals and meetings fill the day. The Soldiers Home board of lady managers meets, elects Mrs Batchelor president, and arranges county assistants.
Congressman Lee and brother Congressman W. H. F. Lee died at their Lexington home yesterday. The notice notes the deaths and mentions Simmons Liver Regulator as a advertised remedy.
R L Abernethy, president of Rutherford College, appeals Raleigh residents for donations to cover 3500 dollars owed to workmen. confined by rheumatism and age, he asks for envelopes containing gifts from 1 to 50 dollars and promises thanks in the Chronicle. promising God will repay with compound interest, he plans to stay through next week.
