An accident on the West End street car line in Winston yesterday injured two men when the front car’s machinery broke and a following open summer car crashed into it. Motorman James Sapp and conductor Joseph Terry were hurt. both ends of the cars were badly damaged. Seventy-odd people joined Centenary M E Church, with eighty two conversions in the revival led by Pastor Norman. Fifty-nine of the converts joined Centenary. President Marion Butler of the State Farmers Alliance spent yesterday in Winston en route to Greensboro.
Guilford College and Oak Ridge Institute played a classic in Guilford College with a 5 to 5 tie after 15 innings. The game ended at darkness and will be replayed October 9 at Athletic Park in Raleigh. Oak Ridge pitcher Stevens fanned 21 with three walks. Guilford’s Smith also struck out 21 with two walks.
In Roxboro North Carolina on October 5 the coroner's jury in the murder and arson case of William Dixon and his wife withheld verdict until today. The report accuses Badger Lawson a young man with a bad record. Dixon's son filed for his arrest and Lawson is jailed in Roxboro. The evidence is circumstantial but reportedly strong. A tobacco advert follows.
A North Carolina officer L L Polk describes his court martial acquittal on charges of absence and misbehavior, details his Battle of Winchester on September 19 1864, and notes Brig Grimes testimony. The article covers the court martial verdict, Polk’s departure for Raleigh, and a telegram of commendation from the 43d NC Regiment and a resolution from comrades.
United Press reports a large Mills mass meeting at Music Hall Cincinnati for the state campaign. Eleven hundred vice-presidents and campaign clubs led the procession with stirring music and banners. The hall and balconies were largely filled with enthusiastic supporters and the general public crowded in.
New York results list seven races at Jerome Park with winners Leona Peter Kitty T Azra Airplant Holm del Bus tee and times. Gloucester program shows six races with winners Bohemian Minnie J Adair Kentucky Ban Penzance and White nose across distances.
In Washington in the seventh inning of the Washington vs Baltimore game, Baltimore refused to continue and umpire Kerins awarded win to Washington 9 to 0. Also in Philadelphia Athletic beat Boston 18 to 2 in game one, game two halted by darkness 0 to 6, and St Louis defeated by Louisville 15 to 7. A Washington resident promotes Bradycrozine as a headache cure.
